4  Unto the godly there ariseth up light in the darkness; * he is merciful, loving, and righteous.
5  Happy is the man that sheweth mercy, and lendeth; he will guide his words with discretion : * for he shall never be moved.
6  The righteous shall be had in everlasting remembrance : * he shall not be afraid of any evil tidings.

Why do the heathen so furiously rage together? * and why do the people imagine a vain thing?
2  The kings of the earth have arisen, and the rulers have taken counsel together * against the Lord, and against his Anointed.
3  Let us break their bonds asunder, * and cast away their cords from us.
4  He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh them to scorn: *  the Lord shall have them in derision.
5  Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, * and vex them in his sore displeasure :
6  Yet I have been stablished King by him upon his holy hill of Sion, * preaching his commandment.

3  Tu autem, Dómine, suscéptor meus es, * glória mea, et exáltans caput meum.
4  Voce mea ad Dóminum clamávi: * et exaudívit me de monte sancto suo.
5  Ego dormívi, et soporátus sum: * et exsurréxi, quia Dóminus suscépit me.

4  I did call upon the Lord with my voice, * and he heard me out of his holy hill.
5  I laid me down and slept, * and rose up again, for the Lord sustained me.

De Epístola prima beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Timótheum

The Lesson is taken from the Former Epistle of blessed Paul the Apostle to Timothy

Fidélis sermo: si quis episcopátum desíderat, bonum opus desíderat.  Opórtet ergo epíscopum irreprehensíbilem esse, uníus uxóris virum, sóbrium, prudéntem, ornátum, pudícum, hospitálem, doctórem, non vinoléntum, non percussórem, sed modéstum; non litigiósum, non cúpidum, sed suæ dómui bene præpósitum, fílios habéntem súbditos cum omni castitáte.  Si quis autem dómui suæ præésse nescit, quómodo Ecclésiæ Dei diligéntiam habébit?  Non neóphytum, ne in supérbiam elátus, in judícium íncidat diáboli.  Opórtet autem illum et testimónium habére bonum ab iis qui foris sunt, ut non in oppróbrium íncidat, et in láqueum diáboli.

This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a Bishop, he desireth a good work.  A Bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (for if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)  Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.  Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Euge serve bone et fidélis, quia in pauca fuísti fidélis, supra multa te constítuam : * Intra in gáudium Dómini tui.

Opórtet enim epíscopum sine crímine esse, sicut Dei dispensatórem : non supérbum, non iracúndum, non vinoléntum, non percussórem, non turpis lucri cúpidum; sed hospitálem, benígnum, sóbrium, justum, sanctum, continéntem, amplecténtem eum, qui secúndum doctrínam est, fidélem sermónem : ut potens sit et exhortári in doctrína sana, et eos, qui contradícunt, argúere.  Sunt enim multi étiam inobediéntes, vaníloqui et seductóres : máxime qui de circumcisióne sunt : quos opórtet redárgui : qui univérsas domos subvértunt, docéntes quæ non opórtet, turpis lucri grátia.

For a Bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not self-willed, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; but a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.  For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the Circumcision: whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: that the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.  The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.  Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.  In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

It is idle to strive to add anything to the praise of our holy and most blessed Father N., whose Feast is this day kept.  For verily, the beauty of his godliness must needs be set forth in our lives rather than on our lips.  Now the Scripture saith : A wise son maketh a glad father.  Thus, if very many do make glad this Saint by the wisdom and devotion wherewith they follow his example, how great will be his glory!  For in Christ Jesus he will have begotten us through the Gospel.

Very meet and right it is on this day which hath been made a holy day for us by the passage to paradise of our blessed Father N., that we should sing this verse of the Psalms : The righteous shall be had in everlasting remembrance.  Right worthy is he to be had in remembrance amongst men who is at this present keeping holy-day amongst Angels.  The word of God saith : Judge none blessed before his death, as though to say Judge a man blessed only when his life is ended ; praise him only when he is made perfect.  For there is a two-fold reason why it is better to praise a dead man than a living ; to call a man holy and worthy after his death can never be participation in the sin of flattery on the part of him that praiseth, nor of vanity on the part of him that receiveth the praise.

4  He asked life of thee; * and thou gavest him length of days, for ever, even world without end.

Now who is this man travelling into a far country, if not our Redeemer, who is gone up from us into heaven in that very flesh of ours whereof he is partaker?  For the earth is rightly  the home of the flesh, which was taken as it were into a far country when our Redeemer took it up into heaven.  And of this man travelling into a far country, we read that he delivered unto his servants his goods.  So doth our Redeemer give spiritual gifts unto his faithful people.  Unto one we read that he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one.  There are five bodily senses; that is, sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch.  By the five talents therefore we are minded of the five senses, which are the several wits whereby we take knowledge of outward things.  And in like manner, by the two talents we are minded of wit and work.  And thus the one talent becometh a figure of the wit alone.
