Lesson iv

Valencia Cathedral, Spain

Vincéntius, honésta stirpe Valéntiæ in Hispánia natus, ab ineúnte ætáte cor gessit seníle.  Qui dum caliginósi hujus sæculi lábilem cursum pro ingénii sui módulo consideráret, religiónis hábitum in órdine Prædicatórum décimo octávo ætátis suæ anno suscépit ; et emíssa solémni professióne, sacris lítteris sédulo incúmbens, theologíæ láuream summa cum laude consecútus est.  Mox obténta a superióribus licéntia, verbum Dei prædicáre, Judæórum perfídiam argúere, Saracenórum erróres confutáre tanta virtúte et efficácia cœpit, ut ingéntem ipsórum infidélium multitúdinem ad Christi fidem perdúxerit, et multa Christianórum míllia a peccátis ad pœniténtiam, a vítiis ad virtútem revocárit.  Eléctus enim a Deo, ut mónita salútis in omnes gentes, tribus et linguas diffúnderet, et extrémi tremendíque judícii diem appropinquáre osténderet, ómnium auditórum ánimos, terróre concússos atque a terrénis afféctibus avúlsos, ad Dei amórem excitábat.

This Vincent was born of respectable parents, at Valencia in Spain, and even as a child he had an heart like the heart of an old man.  Considering to the utmost of his young understanding, how fleeting is the course of this dark world, he, in the eighteenth year of his age, took the habit of Friar in the Order of Preachers.  After he had made his solemn profession, he devoted himself to sacred learning, and took the degree of Master of Divinity with much distinction.  He soon after received permission from his superiors to preach the word of God, on which duty he entered with such power and success, striving against the unbelief of the Jews, and overthrowing the errors of the Saracens, that he brought an exceeding great multitude of unbelievers to believe in Christ, and turned many thousands of Christians from sin to sorrow, and from vice to virtue.  He was a chosen vessel unto God to proclaim the tidings of salvation among all nations, and tribes, and tongues, crying out that the last day, that awful day of judgment, is at hand, smiting consternation into the minds of all, as many as heard him, weaning their love from a perishing world, and turning it to God.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  The Lord multiplied the fruit of his labours and defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait. * And gave him perpetual glory, alleluia.
V.  The Lord guided the righteous in right paths, and shewed him the kingdom of God.
R.  And gave him perpetual glory, alleluia.

V.  Jube domne, (Dómine) benedícere.

V.  Vouchsafe, Reverend Father (O Lord), thy blessing.

Benedíctio 5: Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ.
R.  Amen.

Benediction 5: May Christ bestow upon us the joys of life eternal.
R.  Amen.

Lesson v

While Vincent wrought the Apostolic work of preaching committed to him, he lived ever as follows : Every morning he sang a solemn Mass, and every day he preached in public.  He fasted every day, unless prevented by some absolute necessity.  He refused to no one his holy and just advice.  He never ate meat, nor wore linen.  He quieted public disturbances, and negotiated the peace of kingdoms.  When the seamless garment of the Church was rent by an horrid schism, he worked his every nerve to unite it again, and keep it one.  He was a burning and shining light of all virtues, walking always in lowliness and simpleness, so that he meekly welcomed and embraced them which spake evil against him and persecuted him.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Amávit eum Dóminus, et ornávit eum : stolam glóriæ índuit eum, * Et ad portas paradísi coronávit eum, allelúja.
V.  Induit eum Dóminus lorícam fídei, et ornávit eum.
R.  Et ad portas paradísi coronávit eum, allelúja.

R.  The Lord loved him and adorned him; he clothed him with a robe of glory : * And crowned him at the gates of Paradise, alleluia.
V.  The Lord hath put on him the breast-plate of faith, and hath adorned him.
R.  And crowned him at the gates of Paradise, alleluia.

V.  Jube domne, (Dómine) benedícere.

V.  Vouchsafe, Reverend Father (O Lord), thy blessing.

Benedíctio 6: Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.
R.  Amen.

Benediction 6: May God enkindle in our hearts the fire of his holy love.
R.  Amen.

The Power of God confirmed his life and doctrine with many great signs and wonders.  He often laid his hands upon the sick and they recovered.  He cast out unclean spirits, and made the deaf to hear, the dumb to speak, and the blind to see.  He cleansed the lepers, and raised the dead.  After passing through many countries of Europe with exceeding profit to souls, worn out with age and disease, but still ever the same unwearied herald of the Gospel, he brought his life and his preaching together to an happy end, at Vannes in Brittany, in the year of salvation 1419.  Pope Callistus III numbered him with the saints.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

The house in Vannes, Brittany, where St. Vincent Ferrer lived

R.  Quia te vidi justum coram me ex ómnibus géntibus, allelúja.
V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Quia te vidi justum coram me ex ómnibus géntibus, allelúja.

R.  This is he which did according to all that God commanded him ; and God said unto him : Enter thou into my rest : * For thee have I seen righteous before me among all people, alleluia.
V.  This is he which despised his life in this world, and is come unto an everlasting kingdom.
R.  For thee have I seen righteous before me among all people, alleluia.
V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R.  For thee have I seen righteous before me among all people, alleluia.

Vincéntius, honésta stirpe Valéntiæ in Hispánia natus, décimo octávo ætátis anno religiónis hábitum in órdine Prædicatórum índuit ; in quo, sacris lítteris sédulo incúmbens, theologíæ láuream summa cum laude obtínuit.

Born of a good family at Valencia in Spain, Vincent was clothed in the habit of the Friars Preachers at the age of eighteen.  He applied himself zealously to sacred studies, and received the degree of Doctor of Theology with great distinction.  Soon he began to preach the word of God with such force and effectiveness that he brought a vast number of unbelievers to the faith of Christ and called back many thousands of Christians from sin to repentance.  He sang Mass every day and daily gave a sermon to the people, never ate meat, calmed quarrels and dissensions and, when the seamless garment of the Church was rent by harmful schism, laboured unceasingly to unite it and to preserve its unity.  At length, worn out by old age and illness, famous for his miracles, he died a most holy death at Vannes in Britanny, and Pope Callistus III numbered him among the Saints.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.
