Audíte verbum Dómini, qui trémitis ad verbum ejus : dixérunt fratres vestri odiéntes vos, et abjiciéntes propter nomen meum : glorificétur Dóminus, et vidébimus in lætítia vestra : ipsi autem confundéntur.  Vox pópuli de civitáte, vox de templo, vox Dómini reddéntis retributiónem inimícis suis.  Antequam parturíret, péperit : ántequam veníret partus ejus, péperit másculum.  Quis audívit umquam tale? et quis vidit huic símile?  Numquid partúriet terra in die una? aut pariétur gens simul, quia parturívit et péperit Sion fílios suos?

Hear the word of the Lord, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name's sake, said, Let the Lord be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.  A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the Lord that rendereth recompence to his enemies.  Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child.  Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the Lord: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb? saith thy God.  Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her: that ye may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.  For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees.

R.  Ecce jam venit plenitúdo témporis, in quo misit Deus Fílium suum in terras, natum de Vírgine, factum sub lege : * Ut eos, qui sub lege erant, redímeret.
V.  Propter nímiam caritátem suam, qua diléxit nos Deus, Fílium suum misit in similitúdinem carnis peccáti.
R.  Ut eos, qui sub lege erant, redímeret.

R.  Behold, the fulness of the time is come, wherein God hath sent forth his Son into the world, born of a Virgin, made under the law : *  To redeem them that were under the law.
V.  God, for his great love wherewith he loved us, hath sent his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh.

Quómodo si cui mater blandiátur, ita ego consolábor vos, et in Jerúsalem consolabímini.  Vidébitis, et gaudébit cor vestrum, et ossa vestra quasi herba germinábunt, et cognoscétur manus Dómini servis ejus, et indignábitur inimícis suis.  Quia ecce Dóminus in igne véniet, et quasi turbo quadrígæ ejus : réddere in indignatióne furórem suum, et increpatiónem suam in flamma ignis, quia in igne Dóminus dijudicábit, et in gládio suo ad omnem carnem, et multiplicabúntur interfécti a Dómino.

As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.  And when ye see this, your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish like an herb: and the hand of the Lord shall be known toward his servants, and his indignation toward his enemies.  For, behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.  For by fire and by his sword will the Lord plead with all flesh: and the slain of the Lord shall be many.

R.  Virgo Israël, revértere ad civitátes tuas : * Usquequo dolens avertéris? generábis Dóminum Salvatórem, oblatiónem novam in terra : * Ambulábunt hómines in salvatiónem.
V.  In caritáte perpétua diléxi te : ídeo attráxi te míserans tui.
R.  Usquequo dolens avertéris? generábis Dóminum Salvatórem, oblatiónem novam in terra.
V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.

R.  O virgin of Israel, turn again to thy cities : * How long wilt thou go about sorrowing?  Thou shalt bring forth the Lord thy Saviour, a new offering in the earth : * Men shall walk in the paths of salvation.
V.  I have loved thee with an everlasting love : therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn thee.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
