First Sunday after Epiphany

which is within the Octave

The Office is of the Feast of the Holy Family as given in its proper place.  But when this Sunday falls on January 13th, its Office is that of the Octave Day of the Epiphany, and in the First Nocturn of Matins is read the beginning of the Former Epistle to the Corinthians as given below.

NOTE : This Sunday can occur on any day in the Octave after January 6th.  The Scriptural Lessons, which are from I Corinthians, are given in their proper place, as they are to be begun on this Sunday, or if impeded, on the nearest unimpeded day, and read thereafter, both within and after the Octave.  But inasmuch as Lessons from Romans are often needed for the Octave until January 12th, these Lessons are given for each day until the Seventh Day of the Octave.  Be it noted, therefore, that if I Corinthians be begun before January 12th, the other Lessons from the same Epistle are substituted for the Lessons given from Romans in the Propers for the Octave.

First Nocturn

Absolutio: Exáudi, Dómine Jesu Christe, preces servórum tuórum, et miserére nobis : Qui cum Patre et Spíritu Sancto vivis et regnas in sæcula sæculórum.
R.  Amen.

Absolution:  Graciously hear, O Lord Jesu Christ, the prayers of thy servants, and have mercy upon us.  Who, with the Father, and the Holy Ghost, livest and reignest, for ever and ever.
R.  Amen.

Benedíctio 1: Benedictióne perpétua benedícat nos Pater ætérnus.
R.  Amen.

Benediction 1:  May the Father Eternal bless us with a never-ending blessing.

Incipit Epístola prima beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

Here beginneth the Former Epistle of blessed Paul to the Corinthians

Paulus vocátus Apóstolus Jesu Christi per voluntátem Dei, et Sósthenes frater, Ecclésiæ Dei quæ est Corínthi, sanctificátis in Christo Jesu, vocátis sanctis, cum ómnibus qui ínvocant nomen Dómini nostri Jesu Christi, in omni loco ipsórum, et nostro.  Gratias vobis, et pax a Deo Patre nostro, et Dómino Jesu Christo.

Paul called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both their's and our's: grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Hódie in Jordáne baptizáto Dómino apérti sunt cæli, et sicut colúmba super eum Spíritus mansit, et vox Patris intónuit : * Hic est Fílius meus diléctus, in quo mihi bene complácui.
V.  Descéndit Spíritus Sanctus corporáli spécie sicut colúmba in ipsum, et vox de cælo facta est.

R.  As on this day the Lord was baptized in Jordan : as on this day the heavens did open and the Spirit descended like a dove ; as on this day the voice of the Father was heard saying : *  This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
V.  The Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said.

Benediction 2: May the Son of God, the sole-begotten, mercifully bless and keep us.

I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; that in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: so that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.  God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

R.  In colúmbæ spécie Spíritus Sanctus visus est, Patérna vox audíta est : * Hic est Fílius meus diléctus, in quo mihi bene complácui.

R.  In the likeness of a dove was the Holy Spirit seen, and the voice of the Father was heard to proclaim : * This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divísions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.  For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.  Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.  Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
