De Epístola secúnda ad Corínthios

Ecce tértio hoc vénio ad vos : In ore duórum vel trium téstium stabit omne verbum.  Prædíxi, et prædíco, ut præsens, et nunc absens iis, qui ante peccavérunt, et céteris ómnibus, quóniam si vénero íterum, non parcam.  An experiméntum quæritis, ejus, qui in me lóquitur Christus, qui in vobis non infirmátur, sed potens est in vobis?  Nam etsi crucifíxus est ex infirmitáte : sed vivit ex virtúte Dei.  Nam et nos infírmi sumus in illo : sed vivémus cum eo ex virtúte Dei in vobis.

This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.  I told you before, and foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which heretofore have sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not spare: since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, which to you-ward is not weak, but is mighty in you.  For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Vosmetípsos tentáte si estis in fide : ipsi vos probáte.  An non cognóscitis vosmetípsos, quia Christus Jesus in vobis est? nisi forte réprobi estis.  Spero autem quod cognoscétis, quia nos non sumus réprobi.  Orámus autem Deum, ut nihil mali faciátis, non ut nos probáti appareámus, sed ut vos quod bonum est faciátis : nos autem ut réprobi simus.  Non enim póssumus áliquid advérsus veritátem, sed pro veritáte.  Gaudémus enim, quóniam nos infírmi sumus, vos autem poténtes estis.  Hoc et orámus vestram consummatiónem.

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?  But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates.  Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates.  For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.  For we are glad, when we are weak, and ye are strong: and this also we wish, even your perfection.

R.  Dómine, exáudi oratiónem meam, et clamor meus ad te pervéniat : * Quia non spernis, Deus, preces páuperum.
V.  Fiant aures tuæ intendéntes in oratiónem servi tui.

R.  O Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry come unto thee : *   For thou, O God, turnest thyself unto the prayer of the poor destitute.
V.  O let thine ears consider well the prayer of thy servant.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Quia non spernis, Deus, preces páuperum.

V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R.  For thou, O God, turnest thyself unto the prayer of the poor destitute.

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.

Proper Third Lesson

Ideo hæc absens scríbo, ut non præsens dúrius agam secúndum potestátem, quam Dóminus dedit mihi in ædificatiónem, et non in destructiónem.  De cétero, fratres, gaudéte, perfécti estóte, exhortámini, idem sápite, pacem habéte, et Deus pacis et dilectiónis erit vobíscum.  Salutáte ínvicem in ósculo sancto.  Salútant vos omnes sancti.  Grátia Dómini nostri Jesu Christi, et cáritas Dei, et communicátio Sancti Spíritus sit cum ómnibus vobis.  Amen.

Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction.  Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.  Greet one another with an holy kiss.  All the saints salúte you.  The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.

R.  Velóciter exáudi me, Deus, * Quia defecérunt sicut fumus dies mei : * Tu autem idem ipse es, et anni tui non defícient.
V.  Dies mei sicut umbra declinavérunt, et ego sicut fœnum árui.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.

Conclusion of Matins
 

After the conclusion of the First Nocturn, the Second Nocturn is begun according to the current weekday.

Second Nocturn

V.  Vespertína orátio ascéndat ad te, Dómine.
R.  Et descéndat super nos misericórdia tua.

V.  Let our evening prayer come up before thee, O Lord.
R.  And let thy mercy come down upon us.

Ad Magnif. Ant:  Suscépit Deus * Israel, púerum suum : sicut locútus est ad Abraham, et semen ejus usque in sæculum.
