Fílii, obedíte paréntibus vestris in Dómino : hoc enim justum est.  Honóra patrem tuum, et matrem tuam.  Quod est mandátum primum in promissióne : ut bene sit tibi, et sis longævus super terram.  Et vos, patres, nolíte ad iracúndiam provocáre fílios vestros : sed educáte illos in disciplína, et correptióne Dómini.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.  Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.  And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; with good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.  And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

R.  For thou, O God, turnest thyself unto the prayer of the poor destitute.

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.

Proper Third Lesson

De cétero, fratres, confortámini in Dómino, et in poténtia virtútis ejus.  Indúite vos armatúram Dei, ut possítis stare advérsus insídias diáboli.  Quóniam non est nobis colluctátio advérsus carnem et sánguinem : sed advérsus príncipes, et potestátes, advérsus mundi rectóres tenebrárum harum, contra spirituália nequítiæ, in cæléstibus.  Proptérea accípite armatúram Dei, ut possítis resístere in die malo, et in ómnibus perfécti stare.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principálities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.  Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

R.  Velóciter exáudi me, Deus, * Quia defecérunt sicut fumus dies mei : * Tu autem idem ipse es, et anni tui non defícient.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.

Conclusion of Matins

After the conclusion of the First Nocturn, the Second Nocturn is begun according to the current weekday.

Second Nocturn

V.  Vespertína orátio ascéndat ad te, Dómine.
R.  Et descéndat super nos misericórdia tua.

V.  Let our evening prayer come up before thee, O Lord.
R.  And let thy mercy come down upon us.

Ad Magnif. Ant:  Suscépit Deus * Israël, púerum suum : sicut locútus est ad Abraham, et semen ejus usque in sæculum.

Ant. on Magnif:  God hath holpen * his servant Israel; as he promised to Abraham and his seed for ever.
