At that time : Jesus spake this parable unto the multitudes of the Jews and unto the chief priests : There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about. And so on, and that which followeth. |

Pleríque várias significatiónes de vineæ appellatióne derívant : sed evidénter Isaías víneam Dómini Sábaoth, domum Israël esse memorávit. Hanc víneam quis álius, nisi Deus, cóndidit? Hic est ergo qui eam locávit colónis, et ipse péregre fuit : non quia ex loco ad locum proféctus est Dóminus, qui ubíque semper præsens est : sed quia est præséntior diligéntibus, negligéntibus abest. Multis tempóribus ábfuit, ne præprópera viderétur exáctio. Nam quo indulgéntior liberálitas, eo inexcusabílior pervicácia. |
Different writers may find different meanings for the term Vineyard, but Isaias saith plainly that the vineyard of the Lord of Sabaoth is the house of Israel. Who but God planted this vineyard? He it was that let it out to husbandmen whilst he himself went into a far country. Now the Lord, who is everywhere present, moveth not from place to place. Nonetheless he is nigh only to them that seek, him. From such as regard him not, he standeth afar off. For a long time he tarried away, lest he might seem to ask too early for the fruits of his vineyard. Where kindness is greatest, there ingratitude is worst. |

When Jacob went forth from his country, he

This is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. |

Unde bene secúndum Matthæum habes, quia et sepem circúmdedit : hoc est, divínæ custódiæ munitióne vallávit, ne facile spiritalium patéret incúrsibus bestiárum. Et fodit in ea tórcular. Quómodo intellígimus quid sit tórcular, nisi forte quia Psalmi pro torculáribus inscribúntur ; eo quod in his mystéria Domínicæ passiónis, modo musti Sancto fervéntis Spíritu, redundántius æstuáverint? Unde ébrii putabántur, quibus Spíritus Sanctus inundábat. Ergo et hic fodit tórcular, in quod uvæ rationábilis fructus intérior spiritáli infusióne deflúeret. |
Thus it is well said, according to Matthew, that he hedged it round about ; that is, he fenced it with the wall of his own divine protection, lest it be too open to the ravages of spiritual wild beasts. And he digged a wine-press in it. After what manner are we to understand the wine-press, save perchance in the same way that certain Psalms are inscribed? to wit : For the Presses. That is to say, In such a Psalm the mysteries of the Lord's compassion do seethe and overflow, like as fermenting new-made wine, working under the power of the Holy Ghost. Whence also it was said of them upon whom the Holy Ghost was outpoured : These men are full of new wine. God therefore digged a winepress, whereinto the inner fruitfulness of the grapes, to wit, our own reasonable service of God, might overflow with spiritual richness by the ferment of the Spirit. |

Si Dóminus Deus meus fúerit
mecum in via ista, per quam ego ámbulo, et custodíerit me, et déderit mihi
panem ad edéndum, et vestiméntum quo opériar, et revocáverit me cum salúte

Erit mihi Dóminus in refúgium, et lapis iste in signum. |

If the Lord my God will be with me, and keep
me in this way that I go, and give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
so that I come again to my father's house in peace, *
Then shall the Lord be my God and my refuge, and thereof this stone shall
be for a sign. |

|
Ædificávit turrim, vérticem scílicet legis attóllens : atque ita hanc víneam munítam, instrúctam, ornátam, locávit Judæis. Et témpore fructuum sérvulos misit. Bene tempus fructuum pósuit, non provéntuum. Nullus enim fructus éxstitit Judæórum, nullus víneæ hujus provéntus, de qua Dóminus ait : Exspectávi ut fáceret uvas, fecit autem spinas. Itaque non lætítiæ vino, non spiritáli musto, sed cruénto Prophetárum sánguine torculária redundárunt. |
And he built a tower : that is, the watch-tower of the Law. And so this his vineyard, thus fenced about, furnished with a press, and adored with the goodly structure of the Law, he let out to Jewry. And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen. Well doth he call it the time of the fruit, not the time of the in-gathering. For Jewry yielded him no fruit ; the Lord had no in-gathering from that vineyard of which he said : When I looked that it should bring forth grapes, it brought forth thorns. Verily, that wine-press overflowed ; not with the wine that maketh glad the heart of man, not with the new wine of the Spirit, but with the blood of the Prophets, brutally shed. |

Erit mihi Dóminus in Deum, et lapis iste quem eréxi in títulum, vocábitur
domus Dei : et de univérsis quæ déderis mihi,

The Lord shall be my God ; and this stone,
which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house ; and of all that
thou shalt give me, thereof a tenth will I surely give to thee,
*
Even tithes and peace-offerings. |

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond. The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles. Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics. |

Ant. on Bened: He will bring those wicked men to a miserable end, * and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits thereof in their seasons. |
