Vani autem sunt omnes hómines, in quibus non subest sciéntia Dei ; et de his, quæ vidéntur bona, non potuérunt intellígere eum qui est, neque opéribus attendéntes agnovérunt quis esset ártifex ; sed aut ignem aut spíritum aut citátum áërem aut gyrum stellárum aut nímiam aquam aut solem et lunam rectóres orbis terrárum deos putavérunt.  Quorum si spécie delectáti, deos putavérunt, sciant quanto his dominátor eórum speciósior est ; speciéi enim generátor hæc ómnia constítuit.

Surely vain are all men by nature, who are ignorant of God, and could not out of the good things that are seen know him that is: neither by considering the works did they acknowledge the workmaster; but deemed either fire, or wind, or the swift air, or the circle of the stars, or the violent water, or the lights of heaven, to be the gods which govern the world.  With whose beauty if they being delighted took them to be gods; let them know how much better the Lord of them is: for the first author of beauty hath created them.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Da mihi, Dómine, sédium tuárum assistrícem sapiéntiam, et noli me reprobáre a púeris tuis : * Quóniam servus tuus sum ego, et fílius ancíllæ tuæ.
V.  Mitte illam de sede magnitúdinis tuæ, ut mecum sit et mecum labóret.

Aut, si virtútem et ópera eórum miráti sunt, intélligant ab illis, quóniam qui hæc fecit, fórtior est illis ; a magnitúdine enim speciéi et creatúræ cognoscibíliter póterit Creátor horum vidéri.  Sed tamen adhuc in his minor est queréla, et hi enim fortásse errant, Deum quæréntes et voléntes inveníre.  Etenim cum in opéribus illíus converséntur, inquírunt et persuásum habent quóniam bona sunt quæ vidéntur.

But if they were astonished at their power and virtue, let them understand by them, how much mightier he is that made them.  For by the greatness and beauty of the creatures proportionably the maker of them is seen.  But yet for this they are the less to be blamed: for they peradventure err, seeking God, and desirous to find him.  For being conversant in his works they search him diligently, and believe their sight: because the things are beautiful that are seen.

Proper Third Lesson

Iterum autem nec his debet ignósci.  Si enim tantum potuérunt scire, ut possent æstimáre sæculum, quómodo hujus Dóminum non facílius invenérunt?  Infelíces autem sunt, et inter mórtuos spes illórum est, qui appellavérunt deos ópera mánuum hóminum, aurum et argéntum, artis inventiónem et similitúdines animálium aut lápidem inútilem opus manus antíquæ.

Howbeit neither are they to be pardoned.  For if they were able to know so much, that they could aim at the world; how did they not sooner find out the Lord thereof?  But miserable are they, and in dead things is their hope, who call them gods, which are the works of men's hands, gold and silver, to shew art in, and resemblances of beasts, or a stone good for nothing, the work of an ancient hand.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
