Coróna sapiéntiæ timor Dómini, replens pacem et salútis fructum ; et vidit et dinumerávit eam : útraque autem sunt dona Dei. Sciéntiam et intelléctum prudéntiæ sapiéntia compartiétur et glóriam tenéntium se exáltat. Radix sapiéntiæ est timére Dóminum, et rami illíus longævi. In thesáuris sapiéntiæ intelléctus et sciéntiæ religiósitas, exsecrátio autem peccatóribus sapiéntia. |
The crown of wisdom is the fear of the Lord, who maketh peace and perfect health to flourish; who hath seen and numbered them ; and both of them are the gifts of God. Wisdom raineth down skill and knowledge of understanding, and exalteth them to honour that hold her fast. The root of wisdom is to fear the Lord, and the branches thereof are long life. In the treasury of wisdom is understanding, and the godly use of knowledge ; but of sinners is wisdom accursed. |

Timor Dómini expéllit peccátum ; nam qui sine timóre est non póterit justificári ; iracúndia enim animositátis illíus subvérsio illíus est. Usque in tempus sustinébit pátiens, et póstea reddítio jucunditátis. Bonus sensus usque in tempus abscóndet verba illíus, et lábia multórum enarrábunt sensum illíus. In thesáuris sapiéntiæ significátio disciplínæ, exsecrátio autem peccatóri cultúra Dei. Fili, concupíscens sapiéntiam consérva justítiam, et Deus præbébit illam tibi. |
The fear of the Lord driveth away sins, for he that feareth him not cannot be justified, for the fury of such an one's anger is his destruction. A patient man shall bear for a time, and afterward joy shall spring up unto him. Good understanding will hide his words for a time, and the lips of many shall declare his wisdom. The understanding of instruction is in the treasures of wisdom, but the worship of God is an abomination to a sinner. My son, if thou desire wisdom, keep the commandments, and the Lord shall give her unto thee. |

Sapiéntia enim et disciplína timor Dómini, et quod beneplácitum est illi fides et mansuetúdo, et adimplébit thesáuros illíus. Ne sis incredíbilis timóri Dómini, et ne accésseris ad illum dúplici corde. Ne fúeris hypócrita in conspéctu hóminum et non scandalizéris in lábiis tuis. Atténde in illis, ne forte cadas et addúcas ánimæ tuæ inhonoratiónem, et revélet Deus abscónsa tua et in médio synagógæ elídat te ; quóniam accessísti malígne ad Dóminum, et cor tuum plenum est dolo et fallácia. |
For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and instruction: and faith and meekness are his delight, and therefore shall he fill his treasures. Be not unbelieving, as touching the fear of the Lord, and come not unto him with a double heart. Be not an hypocrite in the sight of men, and give not offence with thy lips. Take good heed thereto, lest perchance thou fall, and bring dishonour upon thy soul, and so God discover thy secrets, and cast thee down in the midst of the congregation, because thou camest wickedly unto the Lord, and thine heart was full of wickedness and deceit. |

Quæ sunt in corde hóminum, óculi tui vident,
Dómine, et in libro tuo ómnia scribéntur : *
Homo videt in fácie, Deus autem in corde. |
R. O Lord,
thine eyes behold what is in the heart of man, and in thy book are all
things written. *
Yea, man looketh on the outward appearance, but God looketh on the heart. |

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond. The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles. Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics. |
