Addidit quoque Job assúmens parábolam suam et dixit : vivit Deus, qui ábstulit judícium meum, et Omnípotens, qui ad amaritúdinem addúxit ánimam meam.  Quia, donec súperest hálitus in me, et spíritus Dei in náribus meis, non loquéntur lábia mea iniquitátem, nec lingua mea meditábitur mendácium.  Absit a me, ut justos vos esse júdicem ; donec defíciam, non recédam ab innocéntia mea.

Moreover Job continued his parable, and said, As God liveth, who hath taken away my judgment; and the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul; all the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils; my lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit.  God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Versa est in luctum cíthara mea, et órganum meum in vocem fléntium : * Parce mihi, Dómine, nihil enim sunt dies mei.

Justificatiónem meam, quam cœpi tenére, non déseram ; neque enim reprehéndit me cor meum in omni vita mea.  Sit ut ímpius inimícus meus, et adversárius meus quasi iníquus.  Quæ est enim spes hypócritæ, si avare rápiat, et non líberet Deus ánimam ejus?  Numquid Deus áudiet clamórem ejus, cum vénerit super eum angústia?  Aut póterit in Omnipoténte delectári, et invocáre Deum omni témpore?

My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.  Let mine enemy be as the wicked, and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous.  For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul?  Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him?  Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God?

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Utinam appenderéntur peccáta mea, quibus iram mérui, * Et calámitas, quam pátior, in statéra.
V.  Quasi aréna maris hæc grávior apparéret, unde et verba mea dolóre sunt plena.

R.  O that my sins, whereby I have deserved wrath,  *  And the calamity whereunder I suffer, were laid in the balances together.
V.  For these same would be heavier than all the sands of the sea, therefore also my words are full of sorrow.

Proper Third Lesson

Docébo vos per manum Dei quæ Omnípotens hábeat, nec abscóndam.  Ecce vos omnes nostis, et quid sine causa vana loquímini?  Hæc est pars hóminis ímpii apud Deum, et heréditas violentórum, quam ab Omnipoténte suscípient : si multiplicáti fúerint fílii ejus, in gládio erunt, et nepótes ejus non saturabúntur pane ; qui réliqui fúerint ex eo sepeliéntur in intéritu, et víduæ illíus non plorábunt.

I will teach you by the hand of God: that which is with the Almighty will I not conceal.  Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it; why then are ye thus altogether vain?  This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty.  If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.  Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
