De libro Tobíæ

The Lesson is taken from
the Book of Tobias

Anna vero uxor ejus ibat ad opus textrínum quotídie, et de labóre mánuum suárum victum, quem cónsequi póterat, deferébat.  Unde factum est ut hædum caprárum accípiens detulísset domi ; cujus cum vocem balántis vir ejus audísset, dixit : Vidéte, ne forte furtívus sit ; réddite eum dóminis suis, quia non licet nobis aut édere ex furto áliquid aut contíngere.

Now Anna his wife went to do women's work every day, and she brought home such living as she could obtain by the work of her hands.  And so it came to pass that she received a kid of the goats, and brought it home.  And when her husband heard it cry, he said : See that haply it be not stolen ; render it to the owners ; for it is not lawful to eat nor to touch anything that is stolen.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Sufficiébat nobis paupértas nostra, ut divítiæ computaréntur : numquam fuísset pecúnia ipsa, pro qua misísti fílium nostrum, * Báculum senectútis nostræ!
V.  Heu me, fili mi, ut quid te mísimus peregrinári, lumen oculórum nostrórum?
R.  Báculum senectútis nostræ!

R.  Our poverty was enough for us, that it might have been accounted riches : O that the money had never been, for which thou hast sent away our son, *  The staff of our old age!
V.  Alas! my son, wherefore have we sent thee wandering, even thee, the light of our eyes?
R.  The staff of our old age!

Ad hæc uxor ejus irráta respóndit : Maniféste vana facta est spes tua et eleemósynæ tuæ modo apparuérunt.  Atque his et áliis hujuscémodi verbis exprobrábat ei.  Tunc Tobías ingémuit et cœpit oráre cum lácrimis dicens : Justus es, Dómine, et ómnia judícia tua justa sunt, et omnes viæ tuæ misericórdia et véritas et judícium.  Et nunc, Dómine, memor esto mei et ne vindíctam sumas de peccátis meis neque reminiscáris delícta mea vel paréntum meórum.

Whereupon his wife was enraged against him, and said : It is manifest that thine hope is disappointed, and that thine alms come not back unto thee again.  And with these and like words did she revile him.  Then Tobias groaned and began to weep, and prayed, and said : O Lord, thou art just, and all thy judgments are just, and all thy ways are mercy, and truth, and judgment.  and now, O Lord, remember me, and take not vengeance of my sins, neither remember mine offences, nor the offences of my forefathers.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Benedícite Deum cæli et coram ómnibus vivéntibus confitémini ei, * Quia fecit vobíscum misericórdiam suam.
V.  Ipsum benedícite et cantáte illi : et enarráte ómnia mirabília ejus.
R.  Quia fecit vobíscum misericórdiam suam.

R.  Bless the God of heaven, and confess him before all living, * For he hath had mercy upon you.
V.  Bless him, and sing praises unto him, and tell of all his marvellous works.
R.  For he hath had mercy upon you.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Quia fecit vobíscum misericórdiam suam.

V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

Proper Third Lesson

Quóniam non obedívimus præcéptis tuis, ídeo tráditi sumus in direptiónem et captivitátem et mortem et in fábulam et in impropérium ómnibus natiónibus, in quibus dispersísti nos.  Et nunc, Dómine, magna judícia tua, quia non égimus secúndum præcépta tua et non ambulávimus sincériter coram te.  Et nunc, Dómine, secúndum voluntátem tuam fac mecum et præcipe in pace récipi spíritum meum ; éxpedit enim mihi mori magis quam vívere.

For we obeyed not thy commandments, wherefore thou hast delivered us for a spoil, and unto captivity, and a reproach to all the nations among whom we are dispersed.  And now, O Lord, great are thy judgments ; because we have not kept thy commandments, neither have walked in truth before thee.  And now, O Lord, deal with me as seemeth best unto thee, and command my spirit to be taken from me in peace, for it is profitable for me to die rather than to live.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

R.  Tempus est ut revértar ad eum qui misit me ; * Vos autem benedícite Deum et enarráte ómnia mirabília ejus.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
