De libro Tobíæ

The Lesson is taken from
the Book of Tobias

Vocávit ad se Tobías fílium suum dixítque ei : Quid póssumus dare viro isti sancto, qui venit tecum?  Respóndens Tobías dixit patri suo : Pater, quam mercédem dábimus ei? aut quid dignum póterit esse benefíciis ejus?  Me duxit et redúxit sanum, pecúniam a Gabélo ipse recépit, uxórem ipse me habére fecit et dæmónium ab ea ipse compéscuit, gáudium paréntibus ejus fecit, meípsum a devoratióne piscis erípuit, te quoque vidére fecit lumen cæli, et bonis ómnibus per eum repléti sumus.  Quid illi ad hæc potérimus dignum dare?  Sed peto te, pater mi, ut roges eum, si forte dignábitur medietátem de ómnibus quæ alláta sunt sibi assúmere.

Then Tobias called his son unto him, and said unto him : what can we give to that holy man that is come unto thee?  And Tobias answered and said unto his father : Father, what wages shall we give unto him? or what can be a sufficient reward for all the kindness that he hath done?  He hath led me, and brought me again in safety, and himself received the money from Gabel, and made me to have my wife, and driven away from here the devil, and made her parents to rejoice , and delivered my myself from being swallowed up by the fish.  Thee also he hath made to see the light of heaven, and by him are we filled with all good things.  For these things what sufficient reward shall we give him?  But, I pray thee, my father, ask him if haply it please him to take half of all that hath been brought.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Peto, Dómine, ut de vínculo impropérii hujus absólvas me, aut certe désuper terram erípias me : * Ne reminiscáris delícta mea vel paréntum meórum, neque vindíctam sumas de peccátis meis : quia eruis sustinéntes te, Dómine.
V.  Omnia enim judícia tua justa sunt, et omnes viæ tuæ misericórdia et véritas : et nunc, Dómine, meménto mei.

R.  I entreat thee, O Lord, that thou wouldest loose me from this reproach, or that thou wouldest take me away from the earth : * Remember not mine offences nor the offences of my forefathers, neither take thou vengeance of my sins ; for thou, O Lord, art a Redeemer unto all that hope in thee.
V.  For all thy judgments are just, and all thy ways are mercy and truth ; and now, O Lord, remember me.

Et vocántes eum, pater scílicet et fílius, tulérunt eum in partem ; et rogáre cœpérunt ut dignarétur dimídiam partem ómnium quæ attúlerant, accéptam habére.  Tunc dixit eis occúlte : Benedícite Deum cæli et coram ómnibus vivéntibus confitémini ei, quia fecit vobíscum misericórdiam suam.  Etenim sacraméntum regis abscóndere bonum est, ópera autem Dei reveláre et confitéri honoríficum est.   Bona est orátio cum jejúnio, et eleemósyna magis quam thesáuros auri recóndere ; quóniam eleemósyna a morte líberat, et ipsa est quæ purgat peccáta, et facit inveníre misericórdiam et vitam ætérnam.  Qui autem fáciunt peccátum et iniquitátem hostes sunt ánimæ suæ.

So the father and the son called him, and took him apart, and began to ask him if it would please him to take half of all that had been brought.  Then he said unto them secretly : Bless the God of Heaven, and confess him before all living, for he hath had mercy upon you.  Verily it is a good thing to keep the king's secret, but to shew forth and to acknowledge the works of God is honourable.  Prayer is good with fasting, and to lay up alms rather than to lay up stores of gold.  For alms doth deliver from death, and the same it is which purgeth away sin, and causeth to find mercy and everlasting life.  But they that work sin and iniquity are enemies of their own soul.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

R.  Omni témpore bénedic Deum, et pete ab eo ut vias tuas dírigat,  * Et in omni témpore consília tua in ipso permáneant.

R.  In all seasons bless God, and ask of him to order thy goings, * And in all seasons let thy counsels be steadfastly in him.

Proper Third Lesson

Manifésto ergo vobis veritátem et non abscóndam a vobis occúltum sermónem.  Quando orábas cum lácrimis et sepeliébas mórtuos et derelinquébas prándium tuum et mórtuos abscondébas per diem in domo tua et nocte sepeliébas eos, ego óbtuli oratiónem tuam Dómino.  Et quia accéptus eras Deo, necésse fuit ut tentátio probáret te.  Et nunc misit me Dóminus ut curárem te et Saram uxórem fílii tui a dæmónio liberárem ; ego enim sum Raphaël Angelus, unus ex septem qui astámus ante Dóminum.  Cumque hæc audíssent, turbáti sunt et treméntes cecidérunt super terram in fáciem suam.  Dixítque eis Angelus : Pax vobis, nolíte timére.

Therefore I shew you the truth, and will not keep an hidden matter back from you.  When thou didst pray with tears, and bury the dead, and leave thy dinner, and hide the dead in thine house by day, and bury them by night, I did bring up thy prayer before the Lord.  And because thou wast accepted with God, it was needs that temptation should try thee.  And now the Lord sent me to heal thee, and to deliver Sara thy son's wife from a devil.  For I am the Angel Raphael, one of the seven, which stand before the Lord.  And when heard it, they were troubled, and quaked, and fell upon their faces on the ground.  And the angel said unto them : Peace be unto you ; fear not.

R.  Memor esto, fili, quóniam páuperem vitam gérimus : * Habébis multa bona, si timúeris Deum.

R.  My son, remember that we have but a frail life : * If thou fear God thou shalt have great goods.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.

Conclusion of Matins
 

After the conclusion of the First Nocturn, the Second Nocturn is begun according to the current weekday.
