De libro Judith

The Lesson is taken from
the Book of Judith

Fílii Israël, qui habitábant in terra Juda, timuérunt valde a fácie Holoférnis ; tremor et horror invásit sensus eórum, ne hoc fáceret Jerúsalem et templo Dómini, quod fécerat céteris civitátibus et templis eárum.  Et misérunt in omnem Samaríam per circúitum usque Jéricho et præoccupavérunt omnes vértices móntium et muris circumdedérunt vicos suos et congregavérunt fruménta in præparatiónem pugnæ.

Now the children of Israel, that dwelt in Judea, were exceedingly afraid of Holofernes.  Trouble and consternation took hold upon them, lest he should do unto Jerusalem and unto the Temple of the Lord as he had done unto the other cities, and unto their temples.  Therefore they sent into all the coasts of Samaria, even unto Jericho, and possessed themselves beforehand of all the tops of the high mountains, and fortified their villages, and laid up victuals for the provision of war.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Adonái, Dómine, Deus magne et mirábilis, qui dedísti salútem in manu féminæ, * Exáudi preces servórum tuórum.

Sacérdos étiam Elíachim scripsit ad univérsos qui erant contra Esdrelon, quæ est contra fáciem campi magni juxta Dóthaïn, et univérsos per quos viæ tránsitus esse póterat, ut obtinérent ascénsus móntium, per quos via esse póterat ad Jerúsalem, et illic custodírent ubi angústum iter esse póterat inter montes.  Et fecérunt fílii Israël secúndum quod constitúerat eis sacérdos Dómini Elíachim.  Et clamávit omnis pópulus ad Dóminum instántia magna, et humiliavérunt ánimas suas in jejúniis et oratiónibus ipsi et mulíeres eórum.

Also Eliakim the Priest wrote to all them that dwelt over against Esdraelon, toward the open country, near to Dothain, and unto all them through whose country the way of the Assyrians might lie, to take possession of the steep places of the hills, whereby they might essay to go up toward Jerusalem, and to hold the passages wheresoever the way was narrow between the mountains.  And the children of Israel did as Eliakim, the Priest of the Lord, had commanded them.  Then all the people cried unto the Lord with great fervency, and humbled their souls in fastings and in prayers, both they and their wives.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Tribulatiónes civitátum audívimus, quas passæ sunt, et defécimus : timor et hebetúdo mentis cécidit super nos et super líberos nostros : ipsi montes nolunt recípere fugam nostram : * Dómine, miserére.
V.  Peccávimus cum pátribus nostris, injúste égimus, iniquitátem fécimus.
R.  Dómine, miserére.

R.  We have heard of the tribulation of those cities, which they have suffered, and we have fainted.  Fear and confusion of mind are fallen upon us.  Even the mountains will not give us a refuge. * Lord, have mercy.
V.  We have sinned like our forefathers, we have done unjustly, and wrought iniquity.
R.  Lord, have mercy.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Dómine, miserére.

V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.

Proper Third Lesson

Et induérunt se sacerdótes cilíciis, et infántes prostravérunt contra fáciem templi Dómini, et altáre Dómini operuérunt cilício ; et clamavérunt ad Dóminum Deum Israël unanímiter, ne daréntur in prædam infántes eórum, et uxóres eórum in divisiónem, et civitátes eórum in extermínium, et sancta eórum in pollutiónem, et fíerent oppróbrium Géntibus.  Tunc Elíachim sacérdos Dómini magnus circuívit omnem Israël allocutúsque est eos dicens : Scitóte quóniam exáudiet Dóminus preces vestras, si manéntes permanséritis in jejúniis et oratiónibus in conspéctu Domini.

And the Priests clothed themselves in sackcloth, and the little children cast themselves down before the Temple of the Lord ; and they put sackcloth about the Altar of the Lord, and cried to the Lord God of Israel all with one consent that their children might not be given for a prey, and their wives for a spoil, and their cities to destruction, and their holy things to profanation, and for a reproach for the Gentiles to rejoice at.  Then Eliakim, the High Priest of the Lord, went about through all Israel, and spake unto them, saying : Know ye of a surety that the Lord will hear your prayers, if ye continue in fastings and in supplications before the Lord.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Benedícat te Dóminus in virtúte sua, qui per te ad níhilum redégit inimícos nostros : * Ut non defíciat laus tua de ore hóminum.
V.  Benedíctus Dóminus qui creávit cælum et terram ; quia hódie nomen tuum ita magnificávit.
R.  Ut non defíciat laus tua de ore hóminum.

R.  The Lord bless thee by his power, who hath brought our enemies to nought through thee : * And may the praise of thee never fail from the mouth of men.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
