De libro Judith

The Lesson is taken from

Et factum est, cum audísset hæc verba, quæ erat fília Merári, fílii Idox, fílii Joseph, fílii Ozíæ, fílii Elai, fílii Jammor, fílii Gédeon, fílii Ráphaim, fílii Achitob, fílii Melchíæ, fílii Enan, fílii Nathaníæ, fílii Saláthiel, fílii Símeon, fílii Ruben, et vir ejus fuit Manásses, qui mórtuus est in diébus messis hordeáceæ ; instábat enim super alligántes manípulos in campo, et venit æstus super caput ejus, et mórtuus est in Bethúlia civitáte sua et sepúltus est illic cum pátribus suis.  Erat autem Judith relícta ejus vídua jam annis tribus et ménsibus sex.

And it came to pass, when Judith the widow heard thereof (which was the daugher of Merari, the son of Idox, the son of Joseph, the son of Oziah, the son of Elai, the son of Jamnor, the son of Gideon, the son of Raphaim, the son of Achitob, the son of Melkiah, the son of Enan, the son of Nathaniah, the son of Salathiel, the son of Simeon, the son of Reuben).  And her husband had been Manasseh, who died in the days of the barley harvest ; for, as he stood overseeing them that bound sheaves in the field, the heat came upon his head ; and he died in Bethulia, his own city, and there was buried with his fathers.  And so Judith was left a widow three years and six months.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Nos álium Deum nescímus præter Dóminum, in quo sperámus : * Qui non déspicit nos, nec ámovet salútem suam a génere nostro.

R.  We know no strange God before the Lord ; in him we trust. *  He despiseth us not, neither putteth he away his salvation from our nation.

Et in superióribus domus suæ fecit sibi secrétum cubículum, in quo cum puéllis suis clausa morabátur.  Et habens super lumbos suos cilícium, jejunábat ómnibus diébus vitæ suæ præter sábbata et neoménias et festa domus Israël.  Erat autem elegánti aspéctu nimis ; cui vir suus relíquerat divítias multas et famíliam copiósam ac possessiónes arméntis boum et grégibus óvium plenas.  Et erat hæc in ómnibus famosíssima, quóniam timébat Dóminum valde, nec erat qui loquerétur de illa verbum malum.

And she made her a closet upon the top of her house, to shut herself up therein with her maids and dwell there ; and put on sackcloth upon her loins, and fasted all her days, save the Sabbaths, and the New Moons, and the Feasts of the house of Israel.  She was also very beautiful to behold ; and her husband had left her much wealth, and many servants, and lands full of cattle and flocks of sheep.  And with all this she was most honourable, for she feared the Lord greatly, and there was none that gave her an ill word.

R.  O Lord, Ruler of the heavens and of the earth, Maker of the waters, King of every creature, * Graciously hear the prayer of thy servants.
V.  Thou, O Lord, unto whom the supplications of the humble and meek are alway well-pleasing.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.

Proper Third Lesson

Hæc ítaque, cum audísset quóniam Ozías promisísset quod, transácto quinto die, tráderet civitátem, misit ad presbyteros Chabri et Charmi.  Et venérunt ad illam, et dixit illis : Quod est hoc verbum, in quo consénsit Ozías, ut tradat civitátem Assyriis, si intra quinque dies non vénerit vobis adjutórium?  Et qui estis vos qui tentátis Dóminum?

When then she had heard that Ozias had promised to deliver up the city after five days, she sent unto the elders Chabri and Charmi.  And they came unto her.  And she said unto them : What is this, whereunto Ozias hath bound himself, to deliver the city unto the Assyrians, unless within five days there come help unto you?  And who be ye, that ye should tempt the Lord?

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Dómine Deus, qui cónteris bella ab inítio, éleva bráchium tuum super Gentes, quæ cógitant servis tuis mala : * Et déxtera tua glorificétur in nobis.
V.  Allíde virtútem eórum in virtúte tua ; cadat robur eórum in iracúndia tua.
R.  Et déxtera tua glorificétur in nobis.
V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.

R.  O Lord God, that breakest the battles from of old, lift up thine arm against the Gentiles, that devise evil against thy servants. * And let thy right hand be glorified in us.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
