If today be a Feria, the Collect is taken from the preceding Sunday as given in the Ordo.    At Vespers, however, the Collect is taken from the following Sunday.

The Lesson is taken from
the Book of Judith

Et factum est post hæc, omnis pópulus post victóriam venit in Jerúsalem adoráre Dóminum ; et mox ut purificáti sunt, obtulérunt omnes holocáusta et vota et repromissiónes suas.  Porro Judith univérsa vasa béllica Holoférnis, quæ dedit illi pópulus, et conopéum, quod ipsa sustúlerat de cubíli ipsíus, óbtulit in anáthema obliviónis.

And it came to pass after these things, that all the people came unto Jerusalem after the victory to worship the Lord : and as soon as they were purified, they all offered burnt-offerings, and free-offerings, and the fits which they have vowed.  Judith also dedicated for an everlasting remembrance all the stuff of war of Holofernes, which the people had given unto her, and the canopy which she had taken out of his bed-chamber.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Erat autem pópulus jucúndus secúndum fáciem sanctórum ; et per tres menses gáudium hujus victóriæ celebrátum est cum Judith.  Post dies autem illos unusquísque rédiit in domum suam, et Judith magna facta est in Bethúlia et præclárior erat univérsæ terræ Israël.  Erat étiam virtúti cástitas adjúncta, ita ut non cognósceret virum ómnibus diébus vitæ suæ, ex quo defúnctus est Manásses vir ejus.  Erat autem, diébus festis, procédens cum magna glória.

So the people continued feasting before the sanctuary, and rejoicing with Judith for three months because of this victory.  And after this time every one returned to his own house ; and Judith became honourable in Bethulia, and famous in all the land of Israel.  And she was strong also in her continency, so that she knew not a man all the days of her life, after that Manásses her husband was dead.  And on the festival-days, she appeared with great honour.

R.  Tribulatiónes civitátum audívimus, quas passæ sunt, et defécimus : timor et hebetúdo mentis cécidit super nos et super líberos nostros : ipsi montes nolunt recípere fugam nostram : * Dómine, miserére.
V.  Peccávimus cum pátribus nostris, injúste égimus, iniquitátem fécimus.
R.  Dómine, miserére.

R.  We have heard of the tribulation of those cities, which they have suffered, and we have fainted.  Fear and confusion of mind are fallen upon us.  Even the mountains will not give us a refuge. * Lord, have mercy.
V.  We have sinned like our forefathers, we have done unjustly, and wrought iniquity.
R.  Lord, have mercy.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.  In the Office of St. Mary on the Sabbath, the Third Lesson is read according to the month of the year.

Mansit autem in domo viri sui annus centum quinque, et dimísit abram suam líberam, et defúncta est ac sepúlta cum viro suo in Bethúlia.  Luxítque illam omnis pópulus diébus septem.  In omni autem spátio vitæ ejus non fuit qui perturbáret Israël, et post mortem ejus annis multis.  Dies autem victóriæ hujus festivitátis ab Hebræis in número sanctórum diérum accípitur et cólitur a Judæis ex illo témpore usque in præséntem diem.

And she remained in her husband's house an hundred and five years, and made her maid free ; and she died ; and was buried with her husband in Bethulia.  And all the people lamented her seven days.  And there was none that made the children of Israel any more afraid in all the life-time of Judith, nor a long time after her death.  And the day of the rejoicing for this victory is taken by the Hebrews into the number of the holidays, and it is observed of the Jews, from that time, even unto this day.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
