Post hæc rex Assuérus exaltávit Aman fílium Amadáthi, qui erat de stirpe Agag, et pósuit sólium ejus super omnes príncipes quos habébat.  Cunctíque servi regis, qui in fóribus palátii versabántur, flectébant génua et adorábant Aman ; sic enim præcéperat eis imperátor.  Solus Mardochæus non flectébat genu neque adorábat eum.  Cui dixérunt púeri regis, qui ad fores palátii præsidébant : Cur præter céteros non obsérvas mandátum regis?

After these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agágite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.  And all the king's servants, that were in the king's gate, bowed, and reverenced Haman: for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence.  Then the king's servants, which were in the king's gate, said unto Mordecai, Why transgressest thou the king's commandment?

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Cumque hoc crébrius dícerent, et ille nollet audíre, nuntiavérunt Aman scire cupiéntes utrum perseveráret in senténtia ; díxerat enim eis se esse Judæum.  Quod cum audísset Aman et experiménto probásset quod Mardochæus non flécteret sibi genu nec se adoráret, irátus est valde et pro níhilo duxit in unum Mardochæum míttere manus suas.

Now it came to pass, when they spake daily unto him, and he hearkened not unto them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai's matters would stand: for he had told them that he was a Jew.  And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence, then was Haman full of wrath.  And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone.

R.  Tribulatiónes civitátum audívimus, quas passæ sunt, et defécimus : timor et hebetúdo mentis cécidit super nos et super líberos nostros : ipsi montes nolunt recípere fugam nostram : * Dómine, miserére.
V.  Peccávimus cum pátribus nostris, injúste égimus, iniquitátem fécimus.
R.  Dómine, miserére.

R.  We have heard of the tribulation of those cities, which they have suffered, and we have fainted.  Fear and confusion of mind are fallen upon us.  Even the mountains will not give us a refuge. * Lord, have mercy.
V.  We have sinned like our forefathers, we have done unjustly, and wrought iniquity.
R.  Lord, have mercy.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.

Proper Third Lesson

Audíerat enim quod esset gentis Judææ, magísque vóluit omnem Judæórum, qui erant in regno Assuéri, pérdere natiónem.  Mense primo, cujus vocábulum est Nisan, anno duodécimo regni Assuéri, missa est sors in urnam, quæ Hebráice dícitur phur, coram Aman, quo die et quo mense gens Judæórum debéret intérfici ; et exívit mensis duodécimus qui vocátur Adar.

For they had shewed him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.  In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, to the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Benedícat te Dóminus in virtúte sua, qui per te ad níhilum redégit inimícos nostros : * Ut non defíciat laus tua de ore hóminum.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
