Lesson i

De libro primo Machabæórum

The Lesson is taken from
the Former Book of Maccabees

Chap. 1, 17-20

Now when the kingdom was established before Antiochus, he thought to reign over Egypt that he might have the dominion of two realms.  Wherefore he entered into Egypt with a great multitude, with chariots, and elephants, and horsemen, and a great navy, and made war against Ptolemee king of Egypt: but Ptolemee was afraid of him, and fled; and many were wounded to death.  Thus they got the strong cities in the land of Egypt and he took the spoils thereof.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Sicut fúerit volúntas in cælo, sic fiat.

R.  Judas said unto Simon his brother : Choose thee out men, and go, and deliver thy brethren that are in Galilee : and I, and Jonathan thy brother, will go into the country of Galaad : * As the will of God is in heaven, so let him do.
V.  Arm yourselves, ye valiant men, and be in readiness : for it is better for us to die in battle, than to behold the calamities of our people, and our sanctuary.
R.  As the will of God is in heaven, so let him do.
