Lesson i

De libro primo Machabæórum

The Lesson is taken from
the Former Book of Maccabees

Chap. 2, 1-6

Hi vidérunt mala quæ fiébant in pópulo Juda et in Jerúsalem.

In those days arose Mattathias the son of John, the son of Simeon, a priest of the sons of Joarib, from Jerusalem, and dwelt in Modin.  And he had five sons, Joannan, called Caddis:  Simon; called Thassi:  Judas, who was called Maccabeus:  Eleazar, called Avaran: and Jonathan, whose surname was Apphus.  And they saw the blasphemies that were committed in Juda and Jerusalem.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

V.  Vir iste in pópulo suo mitíssimus appáruit.

R.  This is a lover of the brethren, and of the people of Israel : *  This is one who prayeth much for the people, and for all the Holy City, Jerusalem.
V.  There appeared a man most gentle toward all his people.
R.  This is one who prayeth much for the people, and for all the Holy City, Jerusalem.

Lesson ii Chap. 2, 7-10

And Mattathias said, Woe is me! wherefore was I born to see this misery of my people, and of the holy city, and to dwell there, when it was delivered into the hand of the enemy, and the sanctuary into the hand of strangers?  Her temple is become as a man without glory.  Her glorious vessels are carried away into captivity, her infants are slain in the streets, her young men with the sword of the enemy.  What nation hath not had a part in her kingdom and gotten of her spoils?

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Tu, Dómine universórum, qui nullam habes indigéntiam, voluísti templum tuum fíeri in nobis ; * Consérva domum istam immaculátam in ætérnum, Dómine.
R.  Consérva domum istam immaculátam in ætérnum, Dómine.

R.  Thou, O Lord of all things, who hast need of nothing, wast pleased that the temple of thine habitation should be among us ; * Therefore now, O Lord, keep this house ever undefiled.
V.  Thou, O Lord, didst choose this house, that thy Name should be called on therein, and to be an house of prayer and petition for thy people.
R.  Therefore now, O Lord, keep this house ever undefiled.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Consérva domum istam immaculátam in ætérnum, Dómine.

V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R.  Therefore now, O Lord, keep this house ever undefiled.

Lesson iii Chap. 2, 14-16

Then Mattathias and his sons rent their clothes, and put on sackcloth, and mourned very sore.  In the mean while the king's officers, such as compelled the people to revolt, came into the city Modin, to make them sacrifice.  And when many of Israel came unto them, Mattathias also and his sons came together.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Aperi óculos tuos, Dómine, et vide afflictiónem nostram : circumdedérunt nos Gentes ad puniéndum nos : * Sed tu, Dómine, exténde bráchium tuum, et líbera ánimas nostras.
V.  Afflige oppriméntes nos et contuméliam faciéntes in supérbiam ; et custódi partem tuam.
R.  Sed tu, Dómine, exténde bráchium tuum, et líbera ánimas nostras.
V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Sed tu, Dómine, exténde bráchium tuum, et líbera ánimas nostras.

R.  Open thine eyes, O Lord, and behold our affliction : for the heathen are come round about us to punish us : * But thou, O Lord, stretch forth thine arm, and deliver our souls.
V.  Blessed be the Lord, who hath created the heaven and the earth, because that he hath so glorified thy name this day.
R.  But thou, O Lord, stretch forth thine arm, and deliver our souls.
V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R.  But thou, O Lord, stretch forth thine arm, and deliver our souls.
