Matins

De libro primo Machabæórum

The Lesson is taken from
the Former Book of Maccabees

Defúnctus est Mathathías anno centésimo quadragésimo sexto et sepúltus est a fíliis suis in sepúlcris patrum suórum in Modin, et planxérunt eum omnis Israël planctu magno.  Et surréxit Judas, qui vocabátur Machabæus, fílius ejus pro eo, et adjuvábant eum omnes fratres ejus et univérsi qui se conjúnxerat patri ejus et præliabántur prælium Israël cum lætítia.  Et dilatávit glóriam pópulo suo, et persecútus est iníquos perscrútans eos et, qui conturbábant pópulum suum, eos succéndit flammis, et repúlsi sunt inimíci ejus præ timóre ejus, et omnes operárii iniquitátis conturbáti sunt, et dirécta est salus in manu ejus.

And Mattathias died in the hundred forty and sixth year, and his sons buried him in the sepulchres of his fathers at Modin, and all Israel made great lamentation for him.  Then his son Judas, called Maccabeus, rose up in his stead.  And all his brethren helped him, and so did all they that held with his father, and they fought with cheerfulness the battle of Israel.  So he gat his people great honour, and pursued the wicked, and sought them out, and burnt up those that vexed his people.  Wherefore the wicked shrunk for fear of him, and all the workers of iniquity were troubled, because salvation prospered in his hand.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Impetum inimicórum ne timuéritis : mémores estóte quómodo salvi facti sunt patres nostri : * Et nunc clamémus in cælum et miserébitur nostri Deus noster.

Et exacerbábat reges multos et lætificábat Jacob in opéribus suis, et in sæculum memória ejus in benedictióne, et perambulávit civitátes Juda et pérdidit ímpios ex eis et avértit iram ab Israël et nominátus est usque ad novíssimum terræ et congregávit pereúntes. Et congregávit Apollónius Gentes et a Samaría virtútem multam et magnam ad bellándum contra Israël.  Et cognóvit Judas et éxiit óbviam illi et percússit et occídit illum, et cecidérunt vulneráti multi, et réliqui fugérunt.  Et accépit spólia eórum et gládium Apollónii ábstulit Judas et erat pugnans in eo ómnibus diébus.

He grieved also many kings, and made Jacob glad with his acts, and his memorial is blessed for ever.  Moreover he went through the cities of Juda, destroying the ungodly out of them, and turning away wrath from Israel: so that he was renowned unto the utmost part of the earth, and he received unto him such as were ready to perish.  Then Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together, and a great host out of Samaria, to fight against Israel.  Which thing when Judas perceived, he went forth to meet him, and so he smote him, and slew him: many also fell down slain, but the rest fled.  Wherefore Judas took their spoils, and Apollonius' sword also, and therewith he fought all his life long.

R.  Congregátæ sunt Gentes in multitúdine, ut dímicent contra nos, et ignorámus quid ágere debeámus : * Dómine Deus, ad te sunt óculi nostri, ne pereámus.
V.  Tu scis quæ cógitant in nos : quómodo potérimus subsístere ante fáciem illórum, nisi tu ádjuves nos?
R.  Dómine Deus, ad te sunt óculi nostri, ne pereámus.

R.  Lo, the heathen are assembled together against us to destroy us, and we know not what to do! * O Lord God, our eyes are upon thee that we perish not.
V.  What things they imagine against us, thou knowest!  How shall we be able to stand against them, except thou, O God, be our help?
R.  O Lord God, our eyes are upon thee that we perish not.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Dómine Deus, ad te sunt óculi nostri, ne pereámus.

V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R.  O Lord God, our eyes are upon thee that we perish not.

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.

Proper Third Lesson

Et cécidit timor Judæ ac fratrum ejus et formído super omnes gentes in circúitu eórum ; et pervénit ad regem nomen ejus, et de præliis Judæ narrábant omnes gentes.  Ut audívit autem rex Antíochus sermónes istos, irátus est ánimo et misit et congregávit exércitum univérsi regni sui, castra fórtia valde, et apéruit ærárium suum et dedit stipéndia exercítui in annum et mandávit illis, ut essent paráti ad ómnia.

Then began the fear of Judas and his brethren, and an exceeding great dread, to fall upon the nations round about them: insomuch as his fame came unto the king, and all nations talked of the battles of Judas.  Now when king Antiochus heard these things, he was full of indignation: wherefore he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm, even a very strong army.  He opened also his treasure, and gave his soldiers pay for a year, commanding them to be ready whensoever he should need them.

R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Tua est poténtia, tuum regnum, Dómine : tu es super omnes gentes : * Da pacem, Dómine, in diébus nostris.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
