De libro primo Machabæórum

Anno centésimo quinquagésimo primo éxiit Demétrius Seléuci fílius ab urbe Roma et ascéndit cum paucis viris in civitátem marítimam et regnávit illic.  Et sedit Demétrius super sedem regni sui.  Et venérunt ad eum viri iníqui et ímpii ex Israël, et Alcimus dux eórum, qui volébat fíeri sacérdos, et accusavérunt pópulum apud regem dicéntes : Pérdidit Judas et fratres ejus omnes amícos tuos et nos dispérsit de terra nostra.  Nunc ergo mitte virum, cui credis, ut eat et vídeat extermínium omne quod fecit nobis et regiónibus regis, et púniat omnes amícos ejus et adjutóres eórum.

In the hundred and one and fiftieth year Demetrius the son of Seleucus departed from Rome, and came up with a few men unto a city of the sea coast, and reigned there.  Now when Demetrius was set upon the throne of his kingdom, there came unto him all the wicked and ungodly men of Israel, having Alcimus, who was desirous to be high priest, for their captain: and they accused the people to the king, saying, Judas and his brethren have slain all thy friends, and driven us out of our own land.  Now therefore send some man whom thou trustest, and let him go and see what havock he hath made among us, and in the king's land, and let him punish them with all them that aid them.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Impetum inimicórum ne timuéritis : mémores estóte quómodo salvi facti sunt patres nostri : * Et nunc clamémus in cælum et miserébitur nostri Deus noster.
V.  Mementóte mirabílium ejus, quæ fecit Pharaóni et exercítui ejus in Mari Rubro.

R.  Be ye not afraid of the assault of the enemy ; but rather remember how our fathers were given deliverance : *  Now therefore let us cry unto heaven, if peradventure the Lord will have mercy upon us.
V.  Remember the marvellous works that he hath done to Pharaoh and his host in the Red Sea.

Et elégit rex ex amícis suis Bácchidem, qui dominabátur trans flumen, magnum in regno et fidélem regi.  Et misit eum ut vidéret extermínium, quod fecit Judas ; sed et Alcimum ímpium constítuit in sacerdótium et mandávit ei fácere ultiónem in fílios Israël.  Et surrexérunt et venérunt cum exércitu magno in terram Juda et misérunt núntios, et locúti sunt ad Judam et ad fratres ejus verbis pacíficis in dolo.  Et non intendérunt sermónibus eórum, vidérunt enim quia venérunt cum exércitu magno.

Then the king chose Bacchides, a friend of the king, who ruled beyond the flood, and was a great man in the kingdom, and faithful to the king, and him he sent with that wicked Alcimus, whom he made high priest, and commanded that he should take vengeance of the children of Israel.  So they departed, and came with a great power into the land of Judea, where they sent messengers to Judas and his brethren with peaceable words deceitfully.  But they gave no heed to their words; for they saw that they were come with a great power.

R.  Congregátæ sunt Gentes in multitúdine, ut dímicent contra nos, et ignorámus quid ágere debeámus : * Dómine Deus, ad te sunt óculi nostri, ne pereámus.
V.  Tu scis quæ cógitant in nos : quómodo potérimus subsístere ante fáciem illórum, nisi tu ádjuves nos?
R.  Dómine Deus, ad te sunt óculi nostri, ne pereámus.

R.  Lo, the heathen are assembled together against us to destroy us, and we know not what to do! * O Lord God, our eyes are upon thee that we perish not.
V.  What things they imagine against us, thou knowest!  How shall we be able to stand against them, except thou, O God, be our help?
R.  O Lord God, our eyes are upon thee that we perish not.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Dómine Deus, ad te sunt óculi nostri, ne pereámus.

Proper Third Lesson

Et convenérunt ad Alcimum et Bácchidem congregátio scribárum requírere quæ justa sunt, et primi, Assidæi, qui erant in fíliis Israël, et exquirébant ab eis pacem.  Dixérunt enim : Homo sacérdos de sémine Aaron venit : non decípiet nos.  Et locútus est cum eis verba pacífica et jurávit illis dicens : Non inferémus vobis malum neque amícis vestris.  Et credidérunt ei, et comprehéndit ex eis sexagínta viros et occídit eos in una die, secúndum verbum quod scriptum est : Carnes sanctórum tuórum et sánguinem ipsórum effudérunt in circúitu Jerúsalem, et non erat qui sepelíret.

Then did there assemble unto Alcimus and Bacchides a company of scribes, to require justice.  Now the Assideans were the first among the children of Israel that sought peace of them: for said they, One that is a priest of the seed of Aaron is come with this army, and he will do us no wrong.  So he spake unto them, peaceably, and sware unto them, saying, we will procure the harm neither of you nor your friends.  Whereupon they believed him: howbeit he took of them threescore men, and slew them in one day, according to the words which he wrote, The flesh of thy saints have they cast out, and their blood have they shed round about Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Tua est poténtia, tuum regnum, Dómine : tu es super omnes gentes : * Da pacem, Dómine, in diébus nostris.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.

After the conclusion of the First Nocturn, the Second Nocturn is begun according to the current weekday.
