When the morrow is November 5th, then the Office is said of the II Sunday of November, and the Lessons of the week following are used as hereinafter given. But when Sunday falls on November 6th or 7th (so that there can then be only four weeks for November), all that is given for the II Sunday and the week following is omitted and on this day is said the Ant. on Mag. as given on Saturday before the III Sunday of November, on which day is begun the Book of Daniel. |

Pro eo autem quod occídi in te justum et ímpium, idcírco egrediétur gládius meus de vagína sua ad omnem carnem ab Austro usque ad Aquilónem, ut sciat omnis caro quia ego Dóminus edúxi gládium meum de vagína sua irrevocábilem. |
And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of man, set thy face toward Jerusalem, and drop thy word toward the holy places, and prophesy against the land of Israel, and say to the land of Israel, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I am against thee, and will draw forth my sword out of his sheath, and will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked. Seeing then that I will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked, therefore shall my sword go forth out of his sheath against all flesh from the south to the north: that all flesh may know that I the Lord have drawn forth my sword out of his sheath: it shall not return any more. |

Et tu, fili hóminis, ingemísce in contritióne lumbórum et in amaritudínibus ingemísce coram eis ; cumque díxerint ad te : Quare tu gemis? dices : Pro audítu, quia venit et tabéscet omne cor, et dissolvéntur univérsæ manus et infirmábitur omnis spíritus, et per cuncta génua fluent aquæ ; ecce venit et fiet, ait Dóminus Deus. Et factus est sermo Dómini ad me dicens : Fili hóminis, prophéta et dices : Hæc dicit Dóminus Deus : Lóquere. Sigh therefore, thou son of man, with the breaking of thy loins; and with bitterness sigh before their eyes. And it shall be, when they say unto thee, Wherefore sighest thou? that thou shalt answer, For the tidings; because it cometh: and every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and every spirit shall faint, and all knees shall be weak as water: behold, it cometh, and shall be brought to pass, saith the Lord GOD. Again the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus saith the Lord; Say, A sword, a sword is sharpened, and also furbished: it is sharpened to make a sore slaughter; it is furbished that it may glitter: should we then make mirth? it contemneth the rod of my son, as every tree. And he hath given it to be furbished, that it may be handled: this sword is sharpened, and it is furbished, to give it into the hand of the slayer. |

Tu ergo, fili hóminis, prophéta et pércute manu ad manum, et duplicétur gládius ac triplicétur gládius interfectórum. Hic est gládius occisiónis magnæ, qui obstupéscere eos facit et corde tabéscere et multíplicat ruínas. |
Cry and howl, son of man: for it shall be upon my people, it shall be upon all the princes of Israel: terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon my people: smite therefore upon thy thigh. Because it is a trial, and what if the sword contemn even the rod? it shall be no more, saith the Lord GOD. Thou therefore, son of man, prophesy, and smite thine hands together. and let the sword be doubled the third time, the sword of the slain: it is the sword of the great men that are slain, which entereth into their privy chambers. I have set the point of the sword against all their gates, that their heart may faint, and their ruins be multiplied: ah! it is made bright, it is wrapped up for the slaughter. |

Quia supra díxerat : Ipsi dicunt ad me : Numquid non per parábolas lóquitur iste? et apértam pópulus flagitábat senténtiam : idcírco id quod Dóminus per metáphoram, sive parábolam, et, ut álii vertére, provérbium, est locútus, nunc maniféstius lóquitur : saltus Nageb et Darom et Theman esse Jerúsalem, et templus illíus, sancta sanctórum et omnem terram Judææ ; flammámque quæ combustúra sit saltum, intélligi gládium devorántem, qui edúctus sit de vagina sua, ut interfíciat justum et ímpium. Hoc est enim lignum víride, et lignum áridum. Unde et Dóminus : si in ligno, ait, víridi tanta fáciunt, in sicco quid fácient? |
In the foregoing chapter it is written : They say of me, Doth he not speak parables? But now, as the people asked for something clearer, the Lord doth speak more openly that which he had uttered in what is diversely called metaphor, parable, or proverb : He sheweth how that the forest of the field of Nageb, and Darom, and Theman, are figures of Jerusalem, and the Temple , and the Holy of Holies, and of all the land of Judah, and that by the flaming fire which should devour the forest, was to be understood that sword, which should be drawn out of the sheath, and should cut off from the land of Israel the righteous and the wicked. The righteous and the wicked are figured by the green tree and the dry tree. Whence also the Lord saith : If they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in a dry? |

Quod quia videbátur obscúrum, et dicta Prophétæ pópulus nesciébat, secúndo pónitur maniféstius, saltum Meridiánum esse Jerúsalem ; et omnes infructuósas árbores, ad quarum radíces secúris pósita sit, intélligi habitatóres ejus, gladiúmque interpretári pro incéndio. Tértio jubétur Prophétæ, ut tacéntibus illis nec interrogántibus cur ista vaticinátus sit, fáciat per quæ interrogétur, et respóndeat quæ Dóminus locútus est. |
The first time he had said : Set thy face toward the South, and drop thy word toward the South wind, and prophesy against the forest of the South. But forasmuch as this seemed dark, and the people knew not what the Prophet said, it is a second time stated more clearly that the forest of the South is Jerusalem ; and all its unfruitful trees, unto whose roots the axe is being laid, are to be understood as figures of her inhabitants ; and the fire to be kindled in it, to be interpreted the sword. A third time is the Prophet commanded that when they should hold their peace, nor ask wherefore he prophesied thus, he should do that by which he should be questioned, and should answer that which the Lord had spoken. |

Et hoc fácies coram eis, ut cum te interrogáverint, cur tanto gémitu conteráris, et quid tibi mali accíderit, ut sic ingemíscas ; tu eis meo sermóne respóndeas : Idcírco plango et dolórem cordis mei dissimuláre non váleo, quia audítus, qui semper meis áuribus insonúerat, ópere complétur et venit, ímminens vidélicet Babylónii furéntis exércitus ; qui cum vénerit et valláverit Jerúsalem, tunc tabéscet omne cor, et dissolvéntur univérsæ manus : ut occupánte pavóre mentes hóminum, nullus áudeat repugnáre. |
Sigh thou, he saith, cry aloud, not softly nor only half sorrowfully, but with the breaking of thy loins, that thy groaning may come from the depth of thy bowels and from the bitterness of thy soul. And this shalt thou do before them. And when they shall ask thee wherefore thou art afflicted with such lamentation, and what evil hath befallen thee that thou groanest thus, thou shalt answer them with my word, saying : I lament, and am not able to hide the grief of mine heart, because that that which hath ever sounded in mine ears will indeed be fulfilled, and cometh, even the host of the wrathful Babylonians which threateneth you ; and when it shall have come, and shall have made trenches all round about Jerusalem, then every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and horror shall take hold of the minds of men, and none shall dare to withstand. |
