NOTE : That today the Minor Prophets are begun with Hosea, and continued in order through the rest of this month ; and the following rule is to be observed : When the beginning of any Minor Prophet is impeded by an occurrent Feast, the aforesaid beginning of the Prophet must as far as possible be placed on the first ensuing day not impeded by a Feast or a similar beginning of a new Book ; otherwise it must be anticipated on a preceding day not similarly impeded ; and if nothing else can be done, at least one Lesson or more of such a beginning is to be read, and on that same day another Lesson is read from another Book ; and in this way two, or even several beginnings may be read on one day, provided the Scripture is kept in the sequence given in this Breviary, even though omissions of second and third Lessons take place.  The Responds, however, except those that go with the Lessons of Sunday, or in anticipated Sunday Office, are to be said from the day of the week on which the Lessons are read.

Incipit liber Osée Prophétæ Here beginneth the Book of Hosea the Prophet
Chap. 1, 1-3

The Prophet Hosea

Verbum Dómini, quod factum est ad Osée fílium Béeri in diébus Ozíæ, Jóathan, Achaz, Ezechíæ regum Juda et in diébus Jeróboam fílii Joas regis Israël.  Princípium loquéndi Dómino in Osée.  Et dixit Dóminus ad Osée : Vade, sume tibi uxórem fornicatiónum, quia fórnicans fornicábitur, terra a Dómino.  Et ábiit et accépit Gomer filiam Debélaim, et concépit et péperit ei fílium.

The word of the Lord that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.  The beginning of the word of the Lord by Hosea. And the Lord said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord.  So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim; which conceived, and bare him a son.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Lesson ii Chap. 1, 4-7

Et dixit Dóminus ad eum  : Voca nomen ejus Jézrahel, quóniam adhuc módicum et visitábo sánguinem Jézrahel super domum Jehu et quiéscere fáciam regnum domus Israël et in illa die cónteram arcum Israël  in valle Jézrahel.  Et concépit adhuc et péperit filiam.  Et dixit ei : Voca nomen ejus Absque misericórdia, quia non addam ultra miseréri dómui Israël, sed oblivióne oblivíscar eórum et dómui Juda miserébor et salvábo eos in Dómino Deo suo et non salvábo eos in arcu et gládio et in bello et in equis et in equítibus.

And the Lord said unto him, Call his name Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel.  And it shall come to pass at that day, that I will break the bow of Israel, in the valley of Jezreel.  And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Loruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away.  But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by the Lord their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen.

Lesson iii Chap. 1, 8-11

Now when she had weaned Loruhamah, she conceived, and bare a son.  Then said God, Call his name Loammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God.  Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.  Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

Ex libro sancti Augustíni Epíscopi de Cívitate Dei The Lesson is taken from the Treatise on the City of God by St. Augustine the Bishop
Liber 18, cap . 28

Osée prophéta, quanto profúndius quidem lóquitur, tanto operósius penetrátur.  Sed áliquid inde suméndum est, et hic ex nostra promissióne ponéndum.  Et erit, inquit, in loco quo dictum est eis, Non pópulus meus vos ; vocabúntur et ipsi fílii Dei vivi.  Hoc testimónium prophéticum de vocatióne pópuli Géntium, qui prius non pertinébat ad Deum, étiam Apóstoli intellexérunt.

The Prophet Hosea, on account of his profúndity, is hard to understand.  But something must be selected from him, and set down here, inasmuch as I had promised to do so.  Hence I quote : And it shall come to pass that, in the place where it shall be said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.  This was understood even by the Apostles as a prophetic witness to the call of the Gentiles, who at first had not been God's people.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Lesson v

Et quia ipse quoque pópulus Géntium spiritáliter est in fíliis Abrahæ, ac per hoc recte dícitur Israël ; proptérea séquitur, et dicit : Et congregabúntur fílii Juda et fílii Israël in idípsum, et ponent síbimet principátum unum, et ascéndent a terra.  Hoc si adhuc velímus expónere, elóquii prophétici obtundétur sapor.  Recolátur tamen lapis ille anguláris, et duo illi paríetes, unus ex Judæis, alter ex Géntibus : ille nómine filiórum Juda, iste nómine filiórum Israël, eídem uni principátui suo in idípsum inniténtes, et ascendéntes agnoscántur in terra.

And since the converted Gentiles are the spiritual children of Abraham, and are therefore rightly called Israelites, therefore he goeth on, and saith : Then shall the Children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one Head, and they shall come up out of the land.  If we went on expounding this, we should do no more than impair the flavour of the prophetic message.  However, let there be remembered the Corner-Stone, of which the Apostles speak ; and let there be acknowledged those twain walls, which the Corner-Stone bindeth in one (namely the Jews and the Gentiles), for the one may meetly be called the Children of Judah, and the other the Children of Israel, inasmuch as they are now bound together under one Head ; and they may be recognized as coming up out of the land of this our exile.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Lesson vi

Istos autem carnáles Israëlítas, qui nunc nolunt crédere in Christum, póstea creditúros, id est fílios eórum, (nam útique isti in suum locum moriéndo transíbunt) idem prophéta testátur, dicens : Quóniam diébus multis sedébunt fílii Israël sine rege, sine príncipe, sine sacrifício, sine altári, sine sacerdótio, sine manifestatiónibus.  Quis non vídeat, nunc sic esse Judæos?

Concerning them that are now Israelites according to the flesh (namely, those that will not believe in Christ, but shall believe hereafter, that is, their children shall believe, for those of the present shall die, and go to their own place), this same Prophet giveth witness, where he saith : The Children of Israel shall abide many days without a King, and without a Prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an Altar, and without a Priest, and without oracles.  To whom is it not manifest that such is the state of the Jews now?

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Sustinúimus pacem, et non venit : quæsívimus bona, et ecce turbátio : cognóvimus, Dómine, peccáta nostra : * Non in perpétuum obliviscáris nos.
