Lesson i

Incipit Zacharías Prophéta

Here beginneth the Book of Zechariah the Prophet

Cap. 1, 1-3

The Prophet Zechariah

In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the Lord unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying, The Lord hath been sore displeased with your fathers.  Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Upon thy walls have I set watchmen, O Jerusalem ; *  Which shall never hold their peace day nor night, praising the Name of the Lord.
V.  They shall proclaim my might unto the nations, and declare my glory unto the Gentiles.
R.  Which shall never hold their peace day nor night, praising the Name of the Lord.

V.  Jube domne, (Dómine) benedícere. V.  Vouchsafe, Reverend Father (O Lord), thy blessing.
Benediction
Lesson ii Cap. 1, 4-5

Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the Lord.  Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever?

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Muro tuo inexpugnábili circumcínge nos, Dómine, et armis tuæ poténtiæ prótege nos semper : * Líbera, Dómine, Deus Israël, clamántes ad te.
V.  Erue nos in mirabílibus tuis, et da glóriam nómini tuo.
R.  Líbera, Dómine, Deus Israël, clamántes ad te.

R.  Hedge us about with thine invincible wall, O Lord, and shield us continually with the arms of thy might ; * O Lord God of Israel, deliver them that cry unto thee.
V.  Deliver us also according to thy marvellous works, and give glory to thy Name.
R.  O Lord God of Israel, deliver them that cry unto thee.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Líbera, Dómine, Deus Israël, clamántes ad te.

V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R.  O Lord God of Israel, deliver them that cry unto thee.

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.

Lesson iii Cap. 1, 6

But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the Lord of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

V.  Peccávimus, ímpie géssimus, iniquitátem fécimus, Dómine, in omnem justítiam tuam.
R.  Non in perpétuum obliviscáris nos.
V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Non in perpétuum obliviscáris nos.

R.  We looked for peace and it came not ; we asked for good, and behold trouble : for we have acknowledged our sins, O Lord : * Forget us not for ever.
V.  O Lord God, we have sinned, we have done ungodly, we have dealt unrighteously in all thine ordinances.
R.  Forget us not for ever.
V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R.  Forget us not for ever.
