De libro primo Regum

The Lesson is taken from
the first Book of Kings

Et índuit Saul David vestiméntis suis et impósuit gáleam æream super caput ejus et vestívit eum loríca.  Accínctus ergo David gládio ejus super vestem suam cœpit tentáre si armátus posset incédere, non enim habébat consuetúdinem.  Dixítque David ad Saul : Non possum sic incédere, quia non usum hábeo.  Et depósuit ea et tulit báculum suum, quem semper habébat in mánibus, et elégit sibi quinque limpidíssimos lápides de torrénte et misit eos in peram pastorálem, quam habébat secum, et fundam manu tulit et procéssit advérsum Philisthæum.

And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.  And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.  And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Lord, when thy people shall turn again to thee, and shall pray unto thee in this house, *  Then hear thou in heaven, O Lord, and deliver them out of the hand of their enemies.
V.  If thy people sin against thee, and turn again, and repent, and come and pray unto thee in this house.

Ibat autem Philisthæus incédens et appropínquans advérsum David, et ármiger ejus ante eum.  Cumque inspexísset Philisthæus et vidísset David, despéxit eum ; erat enim adoléscens rufus et pulcher aspéctu.  Et dixit Philisthæus ad David : Numquid ego canis sum, quod tu venis ad me cum báculo?  Et maledíxit Philisthæus David in diis suis, dixítque ad David : Veni ad me et dabo carnes tuas volatílibus cæli et béstiis terræ.  Dixit autem David ad Philisthæum : Tu venis ad me cum gládio et hasta et clypeo, ego autem vénio ad te in nómine Dómini exercítuum, Dei ágminum Israël, quibus exprobrásti hódie ; et dabit te Dóminus in manu mea, et percútiam te et áuferam caput tuum a te et dabo cadávera castrórum Philísthiim hódie volatílibus cæli et béstiis terræ, ut sciat omnis terra quia est Deus in Israël.

And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.  And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.  And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.  And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.  Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.  This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

R.  Factum est, dum tólleret Dóminus Elíam per túrbinem in cælum, * Eliséus clamábat, dicens : Pater mi, pater mi, currus Israël, et auríga ejus.
V.  Cumque pérgerent, et incedéntes sermocinaréntur, ecce currus ígneus et equi ígnei divisérunt utrúmque, et ascéndit Elías per túrbinem in cælum.

R.  And it came to pass when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind ;   *  Elisha cried, and said : My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof.
V.  And as they still went on, and talked, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder, and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

Cum ergo surrexísset Philisthæus et veníret et appropinquáret contra David, festinávit David et cucúrrit ad pugnam ex advérso Philisthæi.  Et misit manum suam in peram tulítque unum lápidem et funda jecit et circumdúcens percússit Philisthæum in fronte ; et infíxus est lapis in fronte ejus, et cécidit in fáciem suam super terram.  Prævaluítque David advérsum Philisthæum in funda et lápide percussúmque Philisthæum interfécit.  Cumque gládium non habéret in manu, David cucúrrit et stetit super Philisthæum et tulit gládium ejus et edúxit eum de vagína sua  et interfécit eum præcidítque caput ejus.

And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.  And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.  So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.  Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
