De libro primo Regum

The Lesson is taken from
the first Book of Kings

Porro, cum reverterétur, percússo Philisthæo, David, egréssæ sunt mulíeres de univérsis úrbibus Israël cantántes chorósque ducéntes in occúrsum Saul regis in tympanis lætítiæ et in sistris.  Et præcinébant mulíeres ludéntes atque dicéntes : Percússit Saul mille, et David decem míllia.  Irátus est autem Saul nimis, et displícuit  in óculis ejus sermo iste, dixítque : Dedérunt David decem míllia et mihi mille dedérunt ; quid ei súperest, nisi solum regnum?

And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.  And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.  And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Peccávi super númerum arénæ maris, et multiplicáta sunt peccáta mea : et non sum dignus vidére altitúdinem cæli præ multitúdine iniquitátis meæ : quóniam irritávi iram tuam, * Et malum coram te feci.
V.  Quóniam iniquitátem meam ego cognósco : et delíctum meum contra me est semper, quia tibi soli peccávi.
R.  Et malum coram te feci.

R.  I have sinned above the number of the sands of the sea ; yea, I am not worthy to look up toward heaven because of the multitude of mine iniquities ; against thee only have I sinned ;  *   And done this evil in thy sight.
V.  I acknowledge my faults, and my sin is ever before me ; against thee only have I sinned.

Non rectis ergo óculis Saul aspíciébat David a die illa et deínceps.  Post diem autem álteram invásit spíritus Dei malus Saul, et prophetábat in médio domus suæ ; David autem psallébat manu sua sicut per síngulos dies.  Tenebátque Saul lánceam et misit eam putans quod confígere posset David cum paríete ; et declinávit David a fácie ejus secúndo.  Et tímuit Saul David eo quod Dóminus esset cum eo, et a se recessísset.  Amóvit ergo eum Saul a se et fecit eum tribúnum super mille viros ; et egrediebátur et intrábat in conspéctu pópuli.

And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.  And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand.  And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.  And Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, and was departed from Saul.  Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Exaudísti, Dómine, oratiónem servi tui, ut ædificárem templum nómini tuo : * Bénedic et sanctífica domum istam in sempitérnum, Deus Israël.
V.  Dómine, qui custódis pactum cum servis tuis, qui ámbulant coram te in toto corde suo.
R.  Bénedic et sanctífica domum istam in sempitérnum, Deus Israël.

R.  O Lord, thou who hast had respect unto the prayer of thy servant, that he should build a temple to thy Name, *  O Lord the God of Israel, bless and sanctify this thy House for ever.
V.  O Lord, thou who keepest Covenant with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart.
R.  O Lord the God of Israel, bless and sanctify this thy House for ever.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

Proper Third Lesson

In ómnibus quoque viis suis David prudénter agébat, et Dóminus erat cum eo.  Vidit ítaque Saul quod prudens esset nimis et cœpit cavére eum.  Omnis autem Israël et Juda diligébat David ; ipse enim ingrediebátur et egrediebátur ante eos.  Dixítque Saul ad David : Ecce fília mea major Merob, ipsam dabo tibi uxórem ; tantúmmodo esto vir fortis et præliáre bella Dómini.  Saul autem reputábat dicens : Non sit manus mea in eum, sed sit super eum manus Philisthinórum.

And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the Lord was with him.  Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.  But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.  And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the Lord's battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.

R.  Audi, Dómine, hymnum et oratiónem, quam servus tuus orat coram te hódie, ut sint óculi tui apérti, et aures tuæ inténtæ, * Super domum istam die ac nocte.
V.  Réspice, Dómine, de sanctuário tuo, et de excélso cælórum habitáculo.
R.  Super domum istam die ac nocte.
V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.

R.  Hearken unto the prayer, O Lord my God, which thy servant prayeth before thee today, that thine eyes may be open and thine ears attent * Toward this House day and night.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
