De libro primo Regum

The Lesson is taken from
the first Book of Kings

Locútus est autem Saul ad Jónatham fílium suum et ad omnes servos suos ut occíderent David.  Porro Jónathas fílius Saul diligébat David valde.  Et indicávit Jónathas David dicens : Quærit Saul pater meus occídere te ; quaprópter obsérva te, quæso, mane, et manébis clam et abscondéris.  Ego autem egrédiens stábo juxta patrem meum in agro ubicúmque fúeris ; et ego loquar de te ad patrem meum et quodcúmque vídero nuntiábo tibi.

And Saul spake to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David.  But Jonathan Saul's son delighted much in David: and Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself until the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself: and I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art, and I will commune with my father of thee; and what I see, that I will tell thee.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Præparáte corda vestra Dómino, et servíte illi soli : * Et liberábit vos de mánibus inimicórum vestrórum.
V.  Convertímini ad eum in toto corde vestro, et auférte deos aliénos de médio vestri.

R.  Prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only,  *  And he will deliver you out of the hand of your enemies.

Locútus est ergo Jónathas de David bona ad Saul patrem suum dixítque ad eum : Ne pecces, rex, in servum tuum David, quia non peccávit tibi, et ópera ejus bona sunt tibi valde.  Et pósuit ánimam suam in manu sua et percússit Philisthæum, et fecit Dóminus salútem magnam univérso Israéli.  Vidísti et lætátus es ; quare ergo peccas in sánguine innóxio interfíciens David, qui est absque culpa?  Quod cum audísset Saul, placátus voce Jónathæ jurávit : Vivit Dóminus, quia non occidétur.

And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been to thee-ward very good: for he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the Lord wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?  And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan: and Saul sware, As the Lord liveth, he shall not be slain.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Deus ómnium exaudítor est : ipse misit Angelum suum, et tulit me de ovibus patris mei : * Et unxit me unctióne misericórdiæ suæ.
V.  Dóminus, qui erípuit me de ore leónis, et de manu béstiæ liberávit me.
R.  Et unxit me unctióne misericórdiæ suæ.

R.  God, which heareth all, even he sent his Angel, and took me from keeping my father's sheep, *  Whereupon he anointed me with the anointing of his mercy.
V.  Even the Lord that delivered me out of the mouth of the lion and the paw of the bear.
R.  Whereupon he anointed me with the anointing of his mercy.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Et unxit me unctióne misericórdiæ suæ.

V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R.  Whereupon he anointed me with the anointing of his mercy.

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.

Proper Third Lesson

Motum est autem rursum bellum, et egréssus David pugnávit advérsum Philísthiim percussítque eos plaga magna, et fugérunt a fácie ejus.  Et factus est spíritus Dómini malus in Saul.  Sedébat autem in domo sua et tenébat lánceam ; porro David psallébat manu sua.  Nisúsque est Saul confígere David láncea in paríete, et declinávit David a fácie Saul ; láncea autem, casso vúlnere, perláta est in paríetem.  Et David fugit et salvátus est nocte illa.

And there was war again: and David went out, and fought with the Philistines, and slew them with a great slaughter; and they fled from him.  And the evil spirit from the Lord was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand.  And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the javelin: but he slipped away out of Saul's presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Dóminus, qui erípuit me de ore leónis, et de manu béstiæ liberávit me, * Ipse me erípiet de mánibus inimicórum meórum.
V.  Misit Deus misericórdiam suam et veritátem suam : ánimam meam erípuit de médio catulórum leónum.
R.  Ipse me erípiet de mánibus inimicórum meórum.
V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Ipse me erípiet de mánibus inimicórum meórum.

R.  The Lord that delivered me out of the mouth of the lion and the paw of the bear. * He it is who will now deliver me out of the hand of mine enemies.
V.  God hath sent forth his mercy and truth, and delivered my soul from among the lions.
R.  He it is who will now deliver me out of the hand of mine enemies.
V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R.  He it is who will now deliver me out of the hand of mine enemies.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
