De libro primo Regum

The Lesson is taken from

Fugit autem David de Najoth, quæ est in Rámatha, veniénsque locútus est coram Jónatha : Quid feci? quæ est iníquitas mea, et quod peccátum meum in patrem tuum, quia quærit ánimam meam?  Qui dixit ei : Absit, non moriéris ; neque enim fáciet pater meus quidquam grande vel parvum nisi prius indicáverit mihi ; hunc ergo celávit me pater meus sermónem tantúmmodo?  Nequáquam erit istud.

And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?  And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will shew it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Percússit Saul mille, et David decem míllia : * Quia manus Dómini erat cum illo : percússit Philisthæum, et ábstulit oppróbrium ex Israël.

Et jurávit rursum Davídi.  Et ille ait : Scit profécto pater tuus quia invéni grátiam in óculis tuis et dicet : Nésciat hoc Jónathas, ne forte tristétur.  Quinímmo vivit Dóminus et vivit ánima tua, quia uno tantum, ut ita dicam, gradu ego morsque divídimur.  Et ait Jónathas ad David : Quodcúmque díxerit mihi ánima tua, fáciam tibi.

And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.  Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

Proper Third Lesson

Dixit autem David ad Jónathan : Ecce caléndæ sunt crástino, et ego ex more sedére sóleo juxta regem ad vescéndum ; dimítte ergo me, ut abscóndar in agro usque ad vésperam diéi tértiæ.  Si respíciens requisíerit me pater tuus, respondébis ei : Rogávit me David ut iret celériter in Béthlehem civitátem suam, quia víctimæ solémnes ibi sunt univérsis contribúlibus  suis.  Si díxerit : Bene, pax erit servo tuo ; si autem fúerit irátus, scito quia compléta est malítia ejus.

And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at even.  If thy father at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.  If he say thus, It is well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be very wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him.

R.  Ego te tuli de domo patris tui, dicit Dóminus, et pósui te páscere gregem pópuli mei : * Et fui tecum in ómnibus ubicúmque ambulásti, firmans regnum tuum in ætérnum.
V.  Fecíque tibi nomen grande, juxta nomen magnórum, qui sunt in terra : et réquiem dedi tibi ab ómnibus inimícis tuis.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
