The Lesson is taken from
the first Book of Kings

Venit autem David in Nobe ad Achímelech sacerdótem.  Et obstúpuit Achímelech eo quod venísset David et dixit ei : Quare tu solus et nullus est tecum?  Et ait David ad Achímelech sacerdótem : Rex præcépit mihi sermónem et dixit : Nemo sciat rem propter quam missus es a me, et cujúsmodi præcépta tibi déderim ; nam et púeris condíxi in illum et illum locum.  Nunc ergo, si quid habes ad manum, vel quinque panes, da mihi, aut quidquid invéneris.

Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?  And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.  Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Peccávi super númerum arénæ maris, et multiplicáta sunt peccáta mea : et non sum dignus vidére altitúdinem cæli præ multitúdine iniquitátis meæ : quóniam irritávi iram tuam, * Et malum coram te feci.
V.  Quóniam iniquitátem meam ego cognósco : et delíctum meum contra me est semper, quia tibi soli peccávi.
R.  Et malum coram te feci.

R.  I have sinned above the number of the sands of the sea ; yea, I am not worthy to look up toward heaven because of the multitude of mine iniquities ; against thee only have I sinned ;  *   And done this evil in thy sight.
V.  I acknowledge my faults, and my sin is ever before me ; against thee only have I sinned.
R.  And done this evil in thy sight.

Et respóndens sacérdos ad David ait illi : Non hábeo láicos panes ad manum, sed tantum panem sanctum ; si mundi sunt púeri máxime a muliéribus?  Et respóndit David sacerdóti et dixit ei : Equidem, si de muliéribus ágitur, continúimus nos ab heri et nudiustértius, quando egrediebámur, et fuérunt vasa puerórum sancta.  Porro via hæc pollúta est, sed et ipsa hódie sanctificábitur in vasis.  Dedit ergo ei sacérdos sanctificátum panem ; neque enim erat ibi panis, nisi tantum panes propositiónis qui subláti fúerant a fácie Dómini, ut poneréntur panes cálidi.

And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.  And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel.  So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the shewbread, that was taken from before the Lord, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Exaudísti, Dómine, oratiónem servi tui, ut ædificárem templum nómini tuo : * Bénedic et sanctífica domum istam in sempitérnum, Deus Israël.

Erat autem ibi vir quidam de servis Saul in die illa intus in tabernáculo Dómini, et nomen ejus Doëg Idumæus potentíssimus pastórum Saul.  Dixit autem David ad Achímelech : Si habes hic ad manum hastam aut gládium? quia gládium meum et arma mea non tuli mecum ; sermo enim regis urgébat.  Et dixit sacérdos : Ecce hic gládius Góliath Philisthæi, quem percussísti in Valle terebínthi : est involútus pállio post ephod.  Si istum vis tóllere, tolle, neque enim hic est álius absque eo.  Et ait David : Non est huic alter símilis, da mihi eum.

Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul.  And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste.  And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

R.  Audi, Dómine, hymnum et oratiónem, quam servus tuus orat coram te hódie, ut sint óculi tui apérti, et aures tuæ inténtæ, * Super domum istam die ac nocte.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.

The first part of Vespers is in the Ordinary

All as at Saturday Vespers except for what is proper as below

Ant:  Montes Gelboë, * nec ros nec plúvia véniant super vos : quia in te abjéctus est clypeus fórtium, clypeus Saul, quasi non esset unctus óleo.  Quómodo cecidérunt fortes in bello?  Jónathas in excélsis interféctus est : Saul et Jónathas, amábiles et decóri valde in vita sua, in morte quoque non sunt divísi.

Ant. on Magnif:  Ye mountains of Gilboa, * let there be no dew, neither let there be rain upon you ; for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed in oil.  How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!  Jonathan is slain upon the high places : Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided.
