COLLECT OF THE PRECEDING SUNDAY

Oremus.
Deus, qui diligéntibus te bona invisibília præparásti : infúnde córdibus nostris tui amóris afféctum ; ut te in ómnibus et super ómnia diligéntes, promissiónes tuas, quæ omne desidérium súperant, consequámur.  Per Dóminum.

Let us pray.
O God, who hast prepared for them that love thee such good things as pass man's understanding ; pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee in all things and above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire.  Through.

Lesson i

De libro secúndo Regum

The Lesson is taken from
the second Book of Kings

Chap. 2, 1-4

And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the Lord said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.  So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal's wife the Carmelite.  And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.  And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

Avertátur, óbsecro, furor tuus, Dómine, a pópulo tuo.

R.  Remember, O Lord, thy Covenant, and say unto the destroying Angel : Stay now thine hand, *  That the land be not utterly laid waste, and that thou destroy not every living soul.
V.  Lo, even I it is that have sinned, and done evil indeed : but these sheep what have they done?  Let thine anger, I pray thee, O Lord, be turned away from thy people.
R.  That the land be not utterly laid waste, and that thou destroy not every living soul.

Lesson ii Chap. 2, 4-7

And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they that buried Saul.  And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabeshgilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the Lord, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.  And now the Lord shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.  Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.
