De libro secúndo Regum

The Lesson is taken from
the second Book of Kings

Et ecce sermo Dómini ad Nathan dicens : Vade et lóquere ad servum meum David : Hæc dicit Dóminus : Numquid tu ædificábis mihi domum ad habitándum?  Neque enim habitávi in domo ex die illa, qua edúxi fílios Israël de terra Ægypti usque in diem hanc, sed ambulábam in tabernáculo et in tentório.

And it came to pass that night, that the word of the Lord came unto Nathan, saying, Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the Lord, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in?  Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Percússit Saul mille, et David decem míllia : * Quia manus Dómini erat cum illo : percússit Philisthæum, et ábstulit oppróbrium ex Israël.
V.  Nonne iste est David, de quo canébant in choro, dicéntes : Saul percússit mille, et David decem míllia?

Per cuncta loca, quæ transívi cum ómnibus fíliis Israël, numquid loquens locútus sum ad unum de tríbubus Israël, cui præcépi ut pásceret pópulum meum Israël dicens : Quare non ædificástis mihi domum cédrinam?  Et nunc hæc dices servo meo David : Hæc dicit Dóminus exercítuum : Ego tuli te de páscuis sequéntem greges, ut esses dux super pópulum meum Israël, et fui tecum in ómnibus ubicúmque ambulásti et interféci univérsos inimícos tuos a fácie tua fecíque tibi nomen grande juxta nomen magnórum, qui sunt in terra.  Et ponam locum pópulo meo Israël et plantábo eum, et habitábit sub eo et non turbábitur ámplius ; nec addent fílii iniquitátis ut afflígant eum sicut prius, ex die qua constítui júdices super pópulum meum Israël.  Et réquiem dabo tibi ab ómnibus inimícis tuis, prædicítque tibi Dóminus, quod domum fáciat tibi Dóminus.

In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of cedar?  Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel: and I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.  Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime, and as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the Lord telleth thee that he will make thee an house.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Montes Gélboë, nec ros nec plúvia véniant super vos, * Ubi cecidérunt fortes Israël.
V.  Omnes montes, qui estis in circúitu ejus, vísitet Dóminus : a Gélboë autem tránseat.

R.  O ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew nor rain upon you! *  For there the mighty of Israel are fallen.
V.  Ye other mountains that stand round about, may the Lord look upon you, but let him pass by Gilboa.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

Proper Third Lesson

Cumque compléti fúerint dies tui, et dormíeris cum pátribus tuis, suscitábo semen tuum post te, quod egrediétur de útero tuo, et firmábo regnum ejus.  Ipse ædificábit domum nómini meo, et stabíliam thronum regni ejus usque in sempitérnum.  Ego ero ei in patrem, et ipse erit mihi in fílium.  Qui si iníque áliquid gésserit, árguam eum in virga virórum et in plagis filiórum hóminum.  Misericórdiam autem meam non áuferam ab eo, sicut ábstuli a Saul, quem amóvi a fácie mea.  Et fidélis erit domus tua et regnum tuum usque in ætérnum ante fáciem tuam, et thronus tuus erit firmus júgiter.  Secúndum ómnia verba hæc et juxta univérsam visiónem istam sic locútus est Nathan ad David.

And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.  He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.  I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: but my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.  And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.  According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

R.  Ego te tuli de domo patris tui, dicit Dóminus, et pósui te páscere gregem pópuli mei : * Et fui tecum in ómnibus ubicúmque ambulásti, firmans regnum tuum in ætérnum.
V.  Fecíque tibi nomen grande, juxta nomen magnórum, qui sunt in terra : et réquiem dedi tibi ab ómnibus inimícis tuis.

R.  I took thee from thy father's house to be Ruler over my people Israel, * And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, to establish the Throne of thy Kingdom forever.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
