De libro secúndo Regum

The Lesson is taken from

Factum est autem verténte anno, eo témpore quo solent reges ad bella procédere, misit David Joab et servos suos cum eo et univérsum Israël, et vastavérunt fílios Ammon et obsedérunt Rabba ; David autem remánsit in Jerúsalem.  Dum hæc ageréntur, áccidit ut súrgeret David de strato suo post merídiem et deambuláret in solário domus régiæ ; vidítque mulíerem se lavántem ex advérso super solárium suum ; erat autem múlier pulchra valde.  Misit ergo rex, et requisívit quæ esset múlier ; nuntiatúmque est ei, quod ipsa esset Bethsabée fília Elíam, uxor Uríæ Hethæi.  Missis ítaque David núntiis, tulit eam.

And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.  And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.  And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?  And David sent messengers, and took her.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Peccávi super númerum arénæ maris, et multiplicáta sunt peccáta mea : et non sum dignus vidére altitúdinem cæli præ multitúdine iniquitátis meæ : quóniam irritávi iram tuam, * Et malum coram te feci.
V.  Quóniam iniquitátem meam ego cognósco : et delíctum meum contra me est semper, quia tibi soli peccávi.

R.  I have sinned above the number of the sands of the sea ; yea, I am not worthy to look up toward heaven because of the multitude of mine iniquities ; against thee only have I sinned ;  *   And done this evil in thy sight.
V.  I acknowledge my faults, and my sin is ever before me ; against thee only have I sinned.

Et revérsa est in domum suam, concépto fœtu.  Mitténsque nuntiávit David et ait : Concépi.  Misit autem David ad Joab dicens : Mitte ad me Uríam Hethæum.  Misítque Joab Uríam ad David.  Et venit Urías ad David.  Quæsivítque David quam recte ágeret Joab et pópulus, et quómodo administrarétur bellum.  Et dixit David ad Uríam : Vade in domum tuam et lava pedes tuos.  Et egréssus est Urías de domo regis, secutúsque est eum cibus régius.  Dormívit autem Urías  ante portam domus régiæ cum áliis servis dómini sui, et non descéndit ad domum suam.  Nuntiatúmque est David a dicéntibus : Non ivit Urías  in domum suam.  Et ait David ad Uríam : Numquid non de via venísti? quare non descendísti in domum tuam?  Et ait Urías ad David : Arca Dei et Israël et Juda hábitant in papiliónibus, et dóminus meus Joab et servi dómini mei super fáciem terræ manent ; et ego ingrédiar domum meam, ut cómedam et bibam et dórmiam cum uxóre mea?  Per salútem tuam et per salútem ánimæ tuæ non fáciam rem hanc.

And she returned unto her house, and conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.  And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.  And when Uriah was come unto him, David demanded of him how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered.  And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of meat from the king.  But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.  And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou not go down unto thine house?  And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Exaudísti, Dómine, oratiónem servi tui, ut ædificárem templum nómini tuo : * Bénedic et sanctífica domum istam in sempitérnum, Deus Israël.
V.  Dómine, qui custódis pactum cum servis tuis, qui ámbulant coram te in toto corde suo.

R.  O Lord, thou who hast had respect unto the prayer of thy servant, that he should build a temple to thy Name, *  O Lord the God of Israel, bless and sanctify this thy House for ever.

Ait ergo David ad Uríam : Mane hic étiam hódie, et cras dimíttam te.  Mansit Urías in Jerusalem in die illa et áltera.  Et vocávit eum David ut coméderet coram se et bíberet et inebriávit eum ; qui egréssus véspere dormívit in strato suo cum servis dómini sui et in domum suam non descéndit.  Factum est ergo mane, et scripsit David epístolam ad Joab misítque per manum Uríæ scribens in epístola : Pónite Uríam ex advérso belli, ubi fortíssimum est prælium, et derelínquite eum ut percússus intéreat.  Igitur cum Joab obsidéret urbem, pósuit Uríam in loco ubi sciébat viros esse fortíssimos.  Egressíque viri de civitáte bellábant advérsum Joab, et cecidérunt de pópulo servórum David, et mórtuus est étiam Urías Hethæus.

And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to day also, and to morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.  And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.  And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.  And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.  And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were.  And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
