De libro secúndo Regum

The Lesson is taken from
the second Book of Kings

Venit ígitur núntius ad David dicens : Toto corde univérsus Israël séquitur Absalom.  Et ait David servis suis qui erant cum eo in Jerúsalem : Súrgite, fugiámus ; neque enim erit nobis effúgium a fácie Absalom.  Festináte égredi, ne forte véniens óccupet nos et impéllat super nos ruínam et percútiat civitátem in ore gládii.  Dixerúntque servi regis ad eum : Omnia, quæcúmque præcéperit dóminus noster rex, libénter exsequémur servi tui.

And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.  And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.  And the king's servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Præparáte corda vestra Dómino, et servíte illi soli : * Et liberábit vos de mánibus inimicórum vestrórum.
V.  Convertímini ad eum in toto corde vestro, et auférte deos aliénos de médio vestri.
R.  Et liberábit vos de mánibus inimicórum vestrórum.

R.  Prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only,  *  And he will deliver you out of the hand of your enemies.
V.  Return unto him with all your hearts, and put away the strange gods from among you.
R.  And he will deliver you out of the hand of your enemies.

Egréssus est ergo rex et univérsa domus ejus pédibus suis ; et derelíquit rex decem mulíeres concubínas ad custodiéndam domum.  Egressúsque rex et omnis Israël pédibus suis stetit procul a domo.  Et univérsi servi ejus ambulábant juxta eum ; et legiónes Ceréthi et Pheléthi et omnes Gethæi pugnatóres válidi sexcénti viri, qui secúti eum fúerant de Geth, pédites præcedébant regem.

And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the house.  And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and tarried in a place that was far off.  And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Deus ómnium exaudítor est : ipse misit Angelum suum, et tulit me de óvibus patris mei : * Et unxit me unctióne misericórdiæ suæ.
V.  Dóminus, qui erípuit me de ore leónis, et de manu béstiæ liberávit me.
R.  Et unxit me unctióne misericórdiæ suæ.

R.  God, which heareth all, even he sent his Angel, and took me from keeping my father's sheep, *  Whereupon he anointed me with the anointing of his mercy.
V.  Even the Lord that delivered me out of the mouth of the lion and the paw of the bear.
R.  Whereupon he anointed me with the anointing of his mercy.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Et unxit me unctióne misericórdiæ suæ.

V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R.  Whereupon he anointed me with the anointing of his mercy.

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.

Proper Third Lesson

Dixit autem rex ad Ethái Gethæum : Cur venis nobíscum?  Revértere et hábita cum rege, quia peregrínus es et egréssus es de loco tuo.  Heri venísti et hódie compélleris nobíscum égredi?  Ego autem vadam quo itúrus sum ; revértere et reduc tecum fratres tuos, et Dóminus fáciet tecum misericórdiam et veritátem, quia ostendísti grátiam et fidem.

Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile.  Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Dóminus, qui erípuit me de ore leónis, et de manu béstiæ liberávit me, * Ipse me erípiet de mánibus inimicórum meórum.
V.  Misit Deus misericórdiam suam et veritátem suam : ánimam meam erípuit de médio catulórum leónum.
R.  Ipse me erípiet de mánibus inimicórum meórum.
V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Ipse me erípiet de mánibus inimicórum meórum.

R.  The Lord that delivered me out of the mouth of the lion and the paw of the bear. * He it is who will now deliver me out of the hand of mine enemies.
V.  God hath sent forth his mercy and truth, and delivered my soul from among the lions.
R.  He it is who will now deliver me out of the hand of mine enemies.
V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R.  He it is who will now deliver me out of the hand of mine enemies.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.

After the conclusion of the First Nocturn, the Second Nocturn is begun according to the current weekday.
