De libro secúndo Regum

The Lesson is taken from
the second Book of Kings

Egréssus est pópulus in campum contra Israël, et factum est prælium in saltu Ephraim.  Et cæsus est ibi pópulus Israël ab exércitu David, fáctaque est plaga magna in die illa vigínti míllium.  Fuit autem ibi prælium dispérsum super fáciem omnis terræ, et multo plures erant, quos saltus consúmpserat de pópulo, quam hi quos voráverat gládius in die illa.

So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim; where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men.  For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the wood devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Peccávi super númerum arénæ maris, et multiplicáta sunt peccáta mea : et non sum dignus vidére altitúdinem cæli præ multitúdine iniquitátis meæ : quóniam irritávi iram tuam, * Et malum coram te feci.
V.  Quóniam iniquitátem meam ego cognósco : et delíctum meum contra me est semper, quia tibi soli peccávi.
R.  Et malum coram te feci.

R.  I have sinned above the number of the sands of the sea ; yea, I am not worthy to look up toward heaven because of the multitude of mine iniquities ; against thee only have I sinned ;  *   And done this evil in thy sight.
V.  I acknowledge my faults, and my sin is ever before me ; against thee only have I sinned.
R.  And done this evil in thy sight.

Accidit autem ut occúrreret Absalom servis David sedens mulo ; cumque ingréssus fuísset mulus subter condénsam quercum et magnam, adhæsit caput ejus quércui et, illo suspénso inter cælum et terram, mulus cui inséderat pertransívit.  Vidit autem hoc quíspiam, et nuntiávit Joab dicens : Vidi Absalom pendére de quercu.  Et ait Joab viro qui nuntiáverat ei : Si vidísti, quare non confodísti eum cum terra et ego dedíssem tibi decem argénti siclos et unum bálteum?  Qui dixit ad Joab : Si appénderes in mánibus meis mille argénteos, nequáquam mítterem manum meam in fílium regis ; audiéntibus enim nobis, præcépit rex tibi et Abísai et Ethái dicens : Custódite mihi púerum Absalom.

And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away.  And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.  And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver, and a girdle.  And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king's son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Exaudísti, Dómine, oratiónem servi tui, ut ædificárem templum nómini tuo : * Bénedic et sanctífica domum istam in sempitérnum, Deus Israël.
V.  Dómine, qui custódis pactum cum servis tuis, qui ámbulant coram te in toto corde suo.
R.  Bénedic et sanctífica domum istam in sempitérnum, Deus Israël.

R.  O Lord, thou who hast had respect unto the prayer of thy servant, that he should build a temple to thy Name, *  O Lord the God of Israel, bless and sanctify this thy House for ever.
V.  O Lord, thou who keepest Covenant with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart.
R.  O Lord the God of Israel, bless and sanctify this thy House for ever.

In Feastdays of Simple rank and in the Office of St. Mary on the Sabbath :

V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Bénedic et sanctífica domum istam in sempitérnum, Deus Israël.

V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R.  O Lord the God of Israel, bless and sanctify this thy House for ever.

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.  In the Office of St. Mary on the Sabbath, the Third Lesson is read according to the month of the year.

Et ait Joab : Non sicut tu vis, sed aggrédiar eum coram te.  Tulit ergo tres lánceas in manu sua et infíxit eas in corde Absalom ; cumque adhuc palpitáret hærens in quercu, cucurrérunt decem júvenes armígeri Joab et percutiéntes interfecérunt eum.  Cécinit autem Joab búccina et retínuit pópulum, ne persequerétur fugiéntem Israël, volens párcere multitúdini.  Et tulérunt Absalom et projecérunt eum in saltu in fóveam grandem et comportavérunt super eum acérvum lápidum magnum nimis.

Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.  And ten young men that bare Joab's armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.  And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people.  And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him.

R.  Audi, Dómine, hymnum et oratiónem, quam servus tuus orat coram te hódie, ut sint óculi tui apérti, et aures tuæ inténtæ, * Super domum istam die ac nocte.
V.  Réspice, Dómine, de sanctuário tuo, et de excélso cælórum habitáculo.
R.  Super domum istam die ac nocte.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.

V.  Let our evening prayer come up before thee, O Lord.
