Appáruit autem Dóminus Salomóni per sómnium nocte dicens : Póstula quod vis ut dem tibi.  Et ait Sálomon : Tu fecísti cum servo tuo David patre meo misericórdiam magnam, sicut ambulávit in conspéctu tuo in veritáte et justítia et recto corde tecum ; custodísti ei misericórdiam tuam grandem et dedísti ei fílium sedéntem super thronum ejus sicut est hódie.

In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.  And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Peccávi super númerum arénæ maris, et multiplicáta sunt peccáta mea : et non sum dignus vidére altitúdinem cæli præ multitúdine iniquitátis meæ : quóniam irritávi iram tuam, * Et malum coram te feci.
V.  Quóniam iniquitátem meam ego cognósco : et delíctum meum contra me est semper, quia tibi soli peccávi.
R.  Et malum coram te feci.

R.  I have sinned above the number of the sands of the sea ; yea, I am not worthy to look up toward heaven because of the multitude of mine iniquities ; against thee only have I sinned ;  *   And done this evil in thy sight.
V.  I acknowledge my faults, and my sin is ever before me ; against thee only have I sinned.
R.  And done this evil in thy sight.

Et nunc, Dómine Deus, tu regnáre fecísti servum tuum pro David patre meo.  Ego autem sum puer párvulus et ignórans egréssum et intróitum meum ; et servus tuus in médio est pópuli quem elegísti, pópuli infiníti, qui numerári et supputári non potest præ multitúdine.  Dabis ergo servo tuo cor dócile, ut pópulum tuum judicáre possit et discérnere inter bonum et malum.  Quis enim póterit judicáre pópulum istum, pópulum tuum hunc multum?

And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.  And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.  Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Exaudísti, Dómine, oratiónem servi tui, ut ædificárem templum nómini tuo : * Bénedic et sanctífica domum istam in sempitérnum, Deus Israël.
V.  Dómine, qui custodis pactum cum servis tuis, qui ámbulant coram te in toto corde suo.
R.  Bénedic et sanctífica domum istam in sempitérnum, Deus Israël.

R.  O Lord, thou who hast had respect unto the prayer of thy servant, that he should build a temple to thy Name, *  O Lord the God of Israel, bless and sanctify this thy House for ever.
V.  O Lord, thou who keepest Covenant with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart.
R.  O Lord the God of Israel, bless and sanctify this thy House for ever.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.

Proper Third Lesson

Plácuit ergo sermo coram Dómino, quod Sálomon postulásset hujuscémodi rem.  Et dixit Dóminus Salomóni : Quia postulásti verbum hoc, et non petísti tibi dies multos nec divítias aut ánimas inimicórum tuórum, sed postulásti tibi sapiéntiam ad discernéndum judícium : ecce feci tibi secúndum sermónes tuos, et dedi tibi cor sápiens et intélligens, in tantum ut nullus ante símilis tui fúerit nec post te surrectúrus sit.  Sed et hæc, quæ non postulásti, dedi tibi, divítias scílicet et glóriam, ut nemo fúerit símilis tui in régibus cunctis retro diébus.

And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.  And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.  And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Audi, Dómine, hymnum et oratiónem, quam servus tuus orat coram te hódie, ut sint óculi tui apérti, et aures tuæ inténtæ, * Super domum istam die ac nocte.
V.  Réspice, Dómine, de sanctuário tuo, et de excélso cælórum habitáculo.
R.  Super domum istam die ac nocte.
V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Super domum istam die ac nocte.

R.  Hearken unto the prayer, O Lord my God, which thy servant prayeth before thee today, that thine eyes may be open and thine ears attent * Toward this House day and night.
V.  Look down, O Lord, from thy holy place, and from thy dwelling place in the height of heaven.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
