Matins

The Lesson is taken from
the third Book of Kings

Misit quoque Hiram rex Tyri servos suos ad Salomónem ; audívit enim quod ipsum unxíssent regem pro patre ejus ; quia amícus fúerat Hiram David omni témpore.  Misit autem Sálomon ad Hiram dicens : Tu scis voluntátem David patris mei, et quia non potúerit ædificáre domum nómini Dómini Dei sui propter bella imminéntia per circúitum, donec daret Dóminus eos sub vestígio pedum ejus.  Nunc autem réquiem dedit Dóminus Deus meus mihi per circúitum, et non est satan neque occúrsus malus.

And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the room of his father: for Hiram was ever a friend of David.  And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying, Thou knowest how that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the Lord his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until the Lord put them under the soles of his feet.  But now the Lord my God hath given me rest on every side, so that there is neither adversary nor evil occurrent.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Percússit Saul mille, et David decem míllia : * Quia manus Dómini erat cum illo : percússit Philisthæum, et ábstulit oppróbrium ex Israël.
V.  Nonne iste est David, de quo canébant in choro, dicéntes : Saul percússit mille, et David decem míllia?
R.  Quia manus Dómini erat cum illo : percússit Philisthæum, et ábstulit oppróbrium ex Israël.

R.  Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.  *  Because the hand of the Lord was with him, he smote the Philistine, and took away the reproach from Israel.
V.  Is not this David of whom they sang one to another in the dances, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands?

Quam ob rem cógito ædificáre templum nómini Dómini Dei mei, sicut locútus est Dóminus David, patri meo, dicens : Fílius tuus, quem dabo pro te super sólium tuum, ipse ædificábit domum nómini meo.  Præcipe ígitur ut præcídant mihi servi tui cedros de Líbano, et servi mei sint cum servis tuis ; mercédem autem servórum tuórum dabo tibi quamcúmque petíeris  ; scis enim quómodo non est in pópulo meo vir qui nóverit ligna cædere sicut Sidónii.

And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name.  Now therefore command thou that they hew me cedar trees out of Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto thee will I give hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt appoint: for thou knowest that there is not among us any that can skill to hew timber like unto the Sidonians.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

R.  Montes Gélboë, nec ros nec plúvia véniant super vos, * Ubi cecidérunt fortes Israël.
V.  Omnes montes, qui estis in circúitu ejus, vísitet Dóminus : a Gélboë autem tránseat.
R.  Ubi cecidérunt fortes Israël.

R.  O ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew nor rain upon you! *  For there the mighty of Israel are fallen.
V.  Ye other mountains that stand round about, may the Lord look upon you, but let him pass by Gilboa.
R.  For there the mighty of Israel are fallen.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Ubi cecidérunt fortes Israël.

V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R.  For there the mighty of Israel are fallen.

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.

Proper Third Lesson

Cum ergo audísset Hiram verba Salomónis, lætátus est valde et ait : Benedíctus Dóminus Deus hódie, qui dedit David fílium sapientíssimum super pópulum hunc plúrimum.  Et misit Hiram ad Salomónem dicens : Audívi quæcúmque mandásti mihi : ego fáciam omnem voluntátem tuam in lignis cédrinis et abiégnis.  Servi mei depónent ea de Líbano ad mare, et ego compónam ea in rátibus in mari usque ad locum quem significáveris mihi ; et applicábo ea ibi, et tu tolles ea præbebísque necessária mihi ut detur cibus dómui meæ.

And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be the Lord this day, which hath given unto David a wise son over this great people.  And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have considered the things which thou sentest to me for: and I will do all thy desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of fir.  My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon unto the sea: and I will convey them by sea in floats unto the place that thou shalt appoint me, and will cause them to be discharged there, and thou shalt receive them: and thou shalt accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Ego te tuli de domo patris tui, dicit Dóminus, et pósui te páscere gregem pópuli mei : * Et fui tecum in ómnibus ubicúmque ambulásti, firmans regnum tuum in ætérnum.
V.  Fecíque tibi nomen grande, juxta nomen magnórum, qui sunt in terra : et réquiem dedi tibi ab ómnibus inimícis tuis.
R.  Et fui tecum in ómnibus ubicúmque ambulásti, firmans regnum tuum in ætérnum.
V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.

R.  I took thee from thy father's house to be Ruler over my people Israel, * And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, to establish the Throne of thy Kingdom forever.
V.  And I have made thee a great Name, above the name of great men that are in the earth, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies.
R.  And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, to establish the Throne of thy Kingdom forever.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
