De libro tértio Regum

The Lesson is taken from
the third Book of Kings

Sed et regína Saba audíta fama Salomónis in nómine Dómini, venit tentáre eum in ænigmátibus.  Et ingréssa Jerúsalem multo cum comitátu et divítiis, camélis portántibus arómata et aurum infinítum nimis et gemmas pretiósas, venit ad regem Salomónem et locúta est ei univérsa quæ habébat in corde suo.  Et dócuit eam Sálomon ómnia verba quæ proposúerat ; non fuit sermo qui regem posset latére, et non respondéret ei.

And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the Lord, she came to prove him with hard questions.  And she came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.  And Solomon told her all her questions: there was not any thing hid from the king, which he told her not.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Recordáre, Dómine, testaménti tui, et dic Angelo percutiénti : Cesset jam manus tua, * Ut non desolétur terra, et ne perdas omnem ánimam vivam.
V.  Ego sum qui peccávi, ego qui iníque egi : isti qui oves sunt, quid fecérunt?  Avertátur, óbsecro, furor tuus, Dómine, a pópulo tuo.
R.  Ut non desolétur terra, et ne perdas omnem ánimam vivam.

R.  Remember, O Lord, thy Covenant, and say unto the destroying Angel : Stay now thine hand, *  That the land be not utterly laid waste, and that thou destroy not every living soul.
V.  Lo, even I it is that have sinned, and done evil indeed : but these sheep what have they done?  Let thine anger, I pray thee, O Lord, be turned away from thy people.
R.  That the land be not utterly laid waste, and that thou destroy not every living soul.

Videns autem regína Saba omnem sapiéntiam Salomónis et domum quam ædificáverat, et cibos mensæ ejus et habitácula servórum et órdines ministrántium vestésque eórum et pincérnas et holocáusta quæ offerébat in domo Dómini, non habébat ultra spíritum ; dixítque ad regem : Verus est sermo, quem audívi in terra mea super sermónibus tuis et super sapiéntia tua, et non credébam narrántibus mihi, donec ipsa veni, et vidi óculis meis, et probávi quod média pars mihi nuntiáta non fúerit.  Major est sapiéntia et ópera tua quam rumor quem audívi.

And when the queen of Sheba had seen all Solomon's wisdom, and the house that he had built, and the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their apparel, and his cupbearers, and his ascent by which he went up unto the house of the Lord; there was no more spirit in her.  And she said to the king, It was a true report that I heard in mine own land of thy acts and of thy wisdom.  Howbeit I believed not the words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it: and, behold, the half was not told me: thy wisdom and prosperity exceedeth the fame which I heard.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Exaudísti, Dómine, oratiónem servi tui, ut ædificárem templum nómini tuo : * Bénedic et sanctífica domum istam in sempitérnum, Deus Israël.
V.  Dómine, qui custódis pactum cum servis tuis, qui ámbulant coram te in toto corde suo.
R.  Bénedic et sanctífica domum istam in sempitérnum, Deus Israël.

R.  O Lord, thou who hast had respect unto the prayer of thy servant, that he should build a temple to thy Name, *  O Lord the God of Israel, bless and sanctify this thy House for ever.
V.  O Lord, thou who keepest Covenant with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart.
R.  O Lord the God of Israel, bless and sanctify this thy House for ever.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.

Proper Third Lesson

Beáti viri tui et beáti servi tui, qui stant coram te semper et áudiunt sapiéntiam tuam.  Sit Dóminus Deus tuus benedíctus, cui complacuísti, et pósuit te super thronum Israël, eo quod diléxerit Dóminus Israël in sempitérnum, et constítuit te regem ut fáceres judícium et justítiam.  Dedit ergo regi centum vigínti talénta auri et arómata multa nimis et gemmas pretiósas .  Non sunt alláta ultra arómata tam multam quam ea quæ dedit regína Saba regi Salomóni.  Sed et classis Hiram, quæ portábat aurum de Ophir, áttulit ex Ophir ligna thyína multa nimis et gemmas pretiósas.

Happy are thy men, happy are these thy servants, which stand continually before thee, and that hear thy wisdom.  Blessed be the Lord thy God, which delighted in thee, to set thee on the throne of Israel: because the Lord loved Israel for ever, therefore made he thee king, to do judgment and justice.  And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices very great store, and precious stones: there came no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.  And the navy also of Hiram, that brought gold from Ophir, brought in from Ophir great plenty of almug trees, and precious stones.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Audi, Dómine, hymnum et oratiónem, quam servus tuus orat coram te hódie, ut sint óculi tui apérti, et aures tuæ inténtæ, * Super domum istam die ac nocte.
V.  Réspice, Dómine, de sanctuário tuo, et de excélso cælórum habitáculo.
R.  Super domum istam die ac nocte.
V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Super domum istam die ac nocte.

R.  Hearken unto the prayer, O Lord my God, which thy servant prayeth before thee today, that thine eyes may be open and thine ears attent * Toward this House day and night.
V.  Look down, O Lord, from thy holy place, and from thy dwelling place in the height of heaven.
R.  Toward this House day and night.
V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
