De libro quarto Regum

Congregávit Bénadad rex Syriæ univérsum exércitum suum et ascéndit et obsidébat Samaríam.  Fáctaque est fames magna in Samaría, et támdiu obséssa est, donec venumdarétur caput ásini octogínta argénteis, et quarta pars cabi stércoris columbárum quinque argénteis.  Cumque rex Israël transíret per murum, múlier quædam exclamávit ad eum dicens : Salva me, dómine mi rex.  Qui ait : Non te salvat Dóminus, unde te possum salváre? de área vel de torculári?

And it came to pass after this, that Benhadad king of Syria gathered all his host, and went up, and besieged Samaria.  And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass's head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of dove's dung for five pieces of silver.  And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman unto him, saying, Help, my lord, O king.  And he said, If the Lord do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the barnfloor, or out of the winepress?

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Præparáte corda vestra Dómino, et servíte illi soli : * Et liberábit vos de mánibus inimicórum vestrórum.
V.  Convertímini ad eum in toto corde vestro, et auférte deos aliénos de médio vestri.

R.  Prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only,  *  And he will deliver you out of the hand of your enemies.

Dixítque ad eam rex : Quid tibi vis?  Quæ respóndit : Múlier ista dixit mihi : Da fílium tuum ut comedámus eum hódie, et fílium meum comedémus cras.  Cóximus ergo fílium meum et comédimus ; dixíque ei die áltera : Da fílium tuum ut comedámus eum ; quæ abscóndit fílium suum.  Quod cum audísset rex, scidit vestiménta sua, et transíbat per murum ; vidítque omnis pópulus cilícium, quo vestítus erat ad carnem intrínsecus.  Et ait rex : Hæc mihi fáciat Deus et hæc addat, si stéterit caput Eliséi fílii Saphat super ipsum hódie.  Eliséus autem sedébat in domo sua, et senes sedébant cum eo.

And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son to morrow.  So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son.  And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his clothes; and he passed by upon the wall, and the people looked, and, behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh.  Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.  But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Deus ómnium exaudítor est : ipse misit Angelum suum, et tulit me de óvibus patris mei : * Et unxit me unctióne misericórdiæ suæ.
V.  Dóminus, qui erípuit me de ore leónis, et de manu béstiæ liberávit me.
R.  Et unxit me unctióne misericórdiæ suæ.

R.  God, which heareth all, even he sent his Angel, and took me from keeping my father's sheep, *  Whereupon he anointed me with the anointing of his mercy.
V.  Even the Lord that delivered me out of the mouth of the lion and the paw of the bear.
R.  Whereupon he anointed me with the anointing of his mercy.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.

Proper Third Lesson

Præmísit ítaque virum ; et ántequam veníret núntius ille, dixit ad senes : Numquid scitis quod míserit fílius homicídæ hic ut præcidátur caput meum?  Vidéte ergo, cum vénerit núntius, cláudíte óstium et non sinátis eum introíre ; ecce enim sónitus pedum dómini ejus post eum est.  Adhuc illo loquénte eis, appáruit núntius qui veniébat ad eum.  Et ait : Ecce, tantum malum a Dómino est ; quid ámplius exspectábo a Dómino?  Dixit autem Eliséus : Audíte verbum Dómini : hæc dicit Dóminus : In témpore hoc cras módius símilæ uno statére erit, et duo módii hórdei statére uno in porta Samaríæ.

And the king sent a man from before him: but ere the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?  And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the Lord; what should I wait for the Lord any longer?  Then Elisha said, Hear ye the word of the Lord; Thus saith the Lord, To morrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Dóminus, qui erípuit me de ore leónis, et de manu béstiæ liberávit me, * Ipse me erípiet de mánibus inimicórum meórum.
V.  Misit Deus misericórdiam suam et veritátem suam : ánimam meam erípuit de médio catulórum leónum.
R.  Ipse me erípiet de mánibus inimicórum meórum.
V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Ipse me erípiet de mánibus inimicórum meórum.

R.  The Lord that delivered me out of the mouth of the lion and the paw of the bear. * He it is who will now deliver me out of the hand of mine enemies.
V.  God hath sent forth his mercy and truth, and delivered my soul from among the lions.
R.  He it is who will now deliver me out of the hand of mine enemies.
V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
