And in the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab began Ahaziah to reign over Judah. And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and adorned her head, and looked out at a window. And as Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, Had Zimri peace, who slew his master? And he lifted up his face to the window, and said, Who is on my side? who? And there looked out to him two or three eunuchs. And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trode her under foot. And when he was come in, he did eat and drink, and said, Go, see now this cursed woman, and bury her: for she is a king's daughter. |

And Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters, and sent to Samaria, unto the rulers of Jezreel, to the elders, and to them that brought up Ahab's children, saying, Now as soon as this letter cometh to you, seeing your master's sons are with you, and there are with you chariots and horses, a fenced city also, and armour; look even out the best and meetest of your master's sons, and set him on his father's throne, and fight for your master's house. |

Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If ye be mine, and if ye will hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your master's sons, and come to me to Jezreel by to morrow this time. Now the king's sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, which brought them up. And it came to pass, when the letter came to them, that they took the king's sons, and slew seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent him them to Jezreel. |

Non putémus nos excusatiónem habitúros, si quando delictórum sócios invenérimus : nam istud, supplícium magis augébit. Quandóquidem et serpens magis punítus est quam múlier, quemádmodum et múlier plus quam vir. Et Jézabel majóres pœnas dedit, quam Achab víneæ raptor ; ipsa quippe univérsum istud negótium texúerat, regíque lapsus occasiónem déderat. Igitur et tu quoque, si réliquis perditiónis causa fúeris, gravióra patiéris quam qui per te subvérsi sunt. Neque enim peccáre tantum in se perditiónis habet, quantum quod réliqui ad peccándum inducúntur. |
Let us not imagine that we are ourselves to be held less guilty, when we find that we have not been alone in sin. On the contrary, such fellowship in sin addeth to our punishment. The serpent was more heavily punished than Eve, and Eve than Adam. Again, Jezebel suffered more than Ahab, who took the vineyard of Naboth ; for she it was who had contrived the whole matter, and so was the occasion of her husband's fall into sin. Even so thou also, if thou hast caused another's ruin, shalt suffer more grievously than shall they, whom thou hast seduced. For truly, it is less wicked to commit sin oneself than to lead another into sin. |

Itaque, si quando peccántes vidérimus, non solum non impellámus, sed et extrahámus ex ipso malítiæ bárathro, ne et aliénæ perditiónis pœnas demus. Recordémur quoque perpétuo terríbilis illíus tribunális, flúminis ígnei, vinculórum insolubílium, profundárum tenebrárum, stridórum déntium, venenosíque vermis. Sed dices : Benígnus est Deus. Ergo hæc ómnia verba sunt, et neque punítur dives ille Lázari contémptor, neque fátuæ vírgines a sponso rejiciúntur? Ergo qui Christum non pavérunt, in ignem diábolo præparátum non abíbunt? Ergo qui sórdibus est véstibus, non períbit, manus ac pedes vinctus? Qui centum denários a consérvo suo exégit, non tradétur tortóribus? Quod de mœchis dictum est, nimírum quod vermis eórum non moriétur, et ignis eórum non exstinguétur, verum non erit? |
If, therefore, we should see others sinning, let us not only not avail any encouragement to them, but let us do what we can to draw them out of the bottomless pit of destruction, lest we should suffer as accomplices in their trespass. Let us be constantly mindful of that right awful judgment-seat ; the river of fire ; the chains that can never be unlocked ; the darkness that cannot be pierced ; the sound of teeth gnashing ; the deadly worm. But thou sayest : God is merciful. Are then all these things but idle words? Is there no punishment for the rich man which gave no heed to Lazarus? Doth the bridegroom open to the foolish virgins the door of the marriage chamber? They that have denied to Christ the necessaries of life, are they not to depart from him into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels? The man that cometh in to the marriage-supper, not having a wedding garment, shall he, or shall he not, be bound hand and foot, and taken away, and cast into outer darkness? The servant that hath no compassion on his fellow-servant, which oweth him an hundred pence, shall he, or shall he not, be delivered to the tormentors? It is said, concerning such as commit adultery, that their worm dieth not, and their fire is not quenched? Is that not true? |

Ego quippe et ex iis quæ dixit Deus, et ex iis quæ fecit, contrárium probáre pótero. Quod si propter futúra non credis, vel saltem propter ea quæ jam facta sunt, crede. Non enim certe minæ sunt et verba tantúmmodo, quæ facta sunt et in opus ipsum exiérunt. Quis ígitur totum orbem indúcto dilúvio stagnávit, ac grave illud naufrágium, omnimodámque géneris nostri perditiónem effécit? Quis deínde fúlmina illa, télaque flammántia super terram Sodomórum dimísit? Quis univérsum Ægypti exércitum in mare demérsit? Quis synagógam Abíron combússit? Quis septuagínta illa míllia propter Davídis peccátum uno témporis moménto peste occídit? Nonne hæc ómnia et ália Deus illis íntulit? |
Think ye that these are perhaps only threats on God's part? Do ye answer, No doubt? How darest thou say such a thing out loud, and proffer a judgment which is nothing but thine own imagination? For in good sooth, I can prove to thee, from the things which God hath done, that thou art wrong. If thou wilt not believe on account on things to come, at least believe on account of things past. Of them at least it cannot be said that they are nought but threats and mere words, for they have happened, and have actually been realized in fact. Who was he which brought in a great flood, until the whole land was standing water, and our whole race perished, save eight persons? Who was he which rained Sodom brimstone and fire out of heaven? Who was he which overthrew all the host of Egypt in the Red Sea? Who was he which sent out a fire and consumed them that were of the faction of Abiram? Who was he which sent a pestilence upon Israel, because David had sinned, so that from the morning even to the time appointed, there died of the people seventy thousand men? Was it not God, and none other, which brought upon them all these things, and more also? |

The Pharisee might at least have said, I am not as many men are. But what meaneth these words : As other men are? All other men except himself. I, said he, am righteous ; others are sinners. I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers. And then he took occasion, from the neighbourhood of the Publican, to plume himself : Or even, quoth he, as this Publican. I the only one of my kind, thought he ; that Publican is one of the others. Mine own righteousness maketh a gulf between me and all such wicked folk as he. |

Parum est, non Deum rogáre, sed se laudáre ; ínsuper et rogánti insultáre. Publicánus autem de longínquo stabat et Deo tamen ipse appropinquábat : cordis consciéntia eum removébat, píetas applicábat. Publicánus autem de longínquo stabat, sed Dóminus eum de propínquo attendébat. |
I fast twice in the week ; I give tithes of all that I possess. If we look in his prayer to find what he went to the temple to pray to God for, we shall find nothing. He went up to pray, but his prayer was not a request of anything from God, but a glorification of himself. It was bad enough not to pray to God, but he also glorified himself and despised his neighbour. But the Publican stood afar off―and yet drew nigh to God. Self-knowledge bade him keep at a distance, but his earnestness made him close. The Publican stood afar off, but the Lord was nigh at hand to hear him. |

Adhuc audi : Percutiébat pectus suum. Pœnas a se ipso exigébat ; proptérea Dóminus confiténti parcébat. Percutiébat pectus suum, dicens : Dómine, propítius esto mihi peccatóri. Ecce qui rogat. Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly ; as for the proud (that is, such as was this Pharisee) he beholdeth them afar off. He knoweth the proud, all the same, but they are afar off from him. Consider now the lowliness of the Publican. It was not only that he stood afar off, but he would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven ; he looked down, that he might be looked upon ; he dared not lift up his eyes unto heaven ; self-knowledge kept him down, though hope raised him up. Consider again, how that he smote upon his breast. He afflicted himself, and therefore the Lord had compassion upon his acknowledgement of guilt. He smote upon his breast, saying : Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner. Hearken here to a prayer! And wonderest thou that when the sinner remembereth, God forgetteth. |
