De libro quarto Regum

The Lesson is taken from
the fourth Book of Kings

Separávit Jeróboam Israël a Dómino et peccáre eos fecit peccátum magnum.  Et ambulavérunt fílii Israël in univérsis peccátis Jeróboam quæ fécerat, et non recessérunt ab eis úsquequo Dóminus auférret Israël a fácie sua, sicut locútus fúerat  in manu ómnium servórum suórum prophetárum ; translatúsque est Israël de terra sua in Assyrios usque in diem hanc.

For he rent Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nébat king: and Jeroboam drave Israel from following the Lord, and made them sin a great sin.  For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them; until the Lord removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Addúxit autem rex Assyriórum de Babylóne et de Cutha et de Avah et de Emath et de Sephárvaim, et collocávit eos in civitátibus Samaríæ pro fíliis Israël : qui possedérunt Samaríam, et habitavérunt in úrbibus ejus.  Cumque ibi habitáre cœpíssent, non timébant Dóminum, et immísit in eos Dóminus leónes, qui interficiébant eos.

And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof.  And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not the Lord: therefore the Lord sent lions among them, which slew some of them.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

V.  Omnes montes, qui estis in circúitu ejus, vísitet Dóminus : a Gélboë autem tránseat.

R.  O ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew nor rain upon you! *  For there the mighty of Israel are fallen.
V.  Ye other mountains that stand round about, may the Lord look upon you, but let him pass by Gilboa.

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

Proper Third Lesson

Nuntiatúmque est regi Assyriórum et dictum : Gentes, quas transtulísti et habitáre fecísti in civitátibus Samaríæ, ignórant legítima Dei terræ, et immísit in eos Dóminus leónes, et ecce interfíciunt eos, eo quod ignórent ritum Dei terræ.  Præcépit autem rex Assyriórum dicens : Dúcite illuc unum de sacerdótibus, quos inde captívos adduxístis ; et vadat et hábitet cum eis et dóceat eos legítima Dei terræ.

Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land.  Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land.

R.  Ego te tuli de domo patris tui, dicit Dóminus, et pósui te páscere gregem pópuli mei : * Et fui tecum in ómnibus ubicúmque ambulásti, firmans regnum tuum in ætérnum.
V.  Fecíque tibi nomen grande, juxta nomen magnórum, qui sunt in terra : et réquiem dedi tibi ab ómnibus inimícis tuis.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
